World record attempt for most comments on an online news item in 24 hours has started. #comment24 #RNLI

At 6am Greenwich Mean Time (that’s in the the UK) an attempt at the world record for the most comments on an online news item in 24 hours began (ie this blog post). According to Guinness World Records® we need around 100k unique comments. That’s just over 1 comment a second! With your help we think we can whoop that.

This is also charity fund raiser for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) the UK. The level of funds raised is not associated with the number of comments and it doesn’t cost to leave a comment but if you want you can make donation by clicking on the big green “DONATE NOW!” button in the sidebar – the bigger the donation the better.

When you leave a comment you have the option to tweet it – please do so if you can as this will help to spread the word using the #comment24 hashtag.

To comply with the rules the comments must be at least 10 characters, a minimum of two words and not comprise solely of punctuation marks. Basically comments have to make sense. Happy commenting & let’s see if we can raise  some cash for the RNLI.

Postscript – conclusion here

good luck from all at b4rn, we love grassroots initiatives to make our world a better place, and although we work on dry land we support the brave people on the high seas.

Let’s light up that fibre with words – let’s see it try see it buzz with comments! May the muses be with you today >> may your fingers fly across that keyboard with inspiration >> with words of wit and wisdom! And, while you’re at it >> direct all your sage thoughts to this page >> before six tomorrow morning!

Again I’d like to echo the good luck sentiment shared by the others below.

Got to shoot out soon but will try and come back with a more insightful post on the issues you mentioned in the blog post at some point.

Crumbs, Have we started? Do I comment on this post, or another one? Maybe I should have gotten up earlier in preparation for this auspicious day. Fingers to the ready … All the best to you Tref to get the record for RNLI x

I think you need to put in a fair bit of effort to be inspired. It’s a matter of serendipity. ‘The harder I work the luckier I get’ kinda thing. That’s personal inspiration. But as for an organisation that inspires I absolutely agree on RNLI. Good luck with the challenge.

I’m sorry to say I think we’re yet to see the worst. 2012 will be worse than 2011, the Euro, poverty, democratic upheaval and war. Let’s hope those in power see sense and hold back on the war front and focus on the economy and improving the lives of those they can help.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Funded by charitable donations, the lifeboat crews and lifeguards of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution have saved over 139000 lives at sea since 1824.

Going Back to Bed in accordance with my New Year’s Resolution inspired by the New Scientist:

If you need an excuse for spending more time in bed during the holidays, this could be it: too little sleep can make you fat. Bo found that the adults who became obese during her six-year study slept an average of about 6.3 hours a night, compared with about 7.2 hours for those who maintained a healthier body weight. The link between sleep and weight held even when her team took into account other important causes of obesity, such as low levels of physical activity. Rachael Taylor at the University of Otago, New Zealand, has found that children aged between 3 and 5 who sleep less than the average 11 hours a night are also more likely to be overweight or obese by the time they are 7 (BMJ, vol 342, p 2712).

Sleep deprivation reduces the secretion of leptin, a hormone that suppresses appetite, and increases levels of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite. “Or it could be as simple as less sleep means more time to eat,” says Taylor. Either way, an extra hour in bed sure beats going to the gym.

Did you know that if you click on the { xxx comments… read them below or add one } << "add one" link it whips you down the the comments box without the need to scroll. Just though I would mention that top tip I had for you all. Now get cracking and lets get going.

Darren and JD – the rules state:

To comply with the rules the comments must be at least 10 characters, a minimum of two words.

So “Good Luck” and “Meow” I don’t think will count! I’ll whip you all into shape before the day is out. Now focus ….

I recall my Grandad’s charity being the RNLI, and as a wee boy putting pennies in the life size children like collection machines. Good luck, he’d have loved this.

An excellent idea. RNLI is a super choice and I hope you reach your target. My inspiration: my friend Tracey who survived Cancer at 25 and lives life to the full 15 years on.

Best wishes from Popeye, Bugs Bunny, Betty Boop, Roland Rat (superstar), Corky The Cat, Road Runner, Mighty Mouse, Drut (mind the trapdoor), Wallace & grommet, Hong Kong Phooey, Inspector Gadget, Mickey Mouse, Fred & Wilma Flintstone, Foghorn Leghorn, Quick Draw McGraw, Charlie Brown & Linus, Dumbo, Snow White……..oh and me.

To comply with the rules the comments must be at least 10 characters, a minimum of two words and not comprise solely of punctuation marks. You can make more than one comment but not so many it looks as if you are a machine. Basically comments have to make sense. Happy commenting & let’s see if we can raise £100k for the RNLI.

As anyone who enjoys watersports (either on or below the water) knows, the RNLI is the fourth emergency service. Without their bravery and skill far more lives would be lost at sea, yet they are nearly all volunteers – I’m in this to help support them!

This is a unique and wonderful idea, which i hope will raise more than the 100,000 expected for the RNLI. If one life is saved then .. wow! … what an acheivement.

Good Luck Tref with the record attempt.

Im hoping 2012 will be a good year since London is hosting the Olympics. This should inspire us as a get together as a nation and support ourt teams and make this a success. Im also hoping that our new data centre will inspire our existing and forthcoming customers to increase their usage of using Timico services.

Good Luck Tref! I hope the target is smashed 🙂 Fantastic cause as well! I’ll think of my inspiration for 2012 throughout the day and add further comment later!

Jess

Dear Tref,

Happy new year. I really hope you meet your ambitious target, it is wonderful to see a record breaking attempt succeed.

My inspiration for the new year is George Osborne. He and the treasury department have a rather unenviable job of trying to balance the government books. Every day the country as a whole borrows £400 million, which can’t go on forever. I hope he succeeds too. I appreciate that this is not very inspirational, but it is important.

Brilliant idea to boost understanding & generate money for the charity. Delighted BT iNet have played a part in the underlying technology. Tell your friends everyone !

Good luck with the record attempt and raising money for RNLI – so far so good!

My mantra for life and therefore 2012 is “it’s all about the journey”… here’s to making the most of each day we have and smiling while we do it.

Best of luck with the record attempt Tref. It’s great that social media can be harnessed in such a way to raise money for a very worthwhile charity.

What a turbulent year 2011 was, and I feel 2012 may be just as eventful, but my inspiration for this year is my community, and by that I mean my friends and family, my village, my work colleagues as well as my social networks. The power of community to come together, achieve great things and inspire others is immeasurable in my book, and certainly for me 2012 is about making the most of this.

Inspired by Stephen Hawking, a man with more restrictions than most but is a leading authority in his field, if only more people made the most of their situations and fought to see what they can achieve.

Plan to close 50% of HM Coastguard Rescue stations & replace with 1 UK Call Center will add to delays in launching RNLI Crews, this in turn will make their job harder.

The scrapping of MCA Tugs and letting commercial ones assist any vessel in difficulties will lead to another disaster like Penlee, as Union Star failed to agree assistance from Commercial Tug and ended up on the rocks!

Great cause, the RNLI (wife ran the RNLI Reindeer Run 10K just before Christmas, this kids and I completed the Santa Saunter) – let’s hope you reach the 10oK mark. And here’s hoping for a interesting 2012, populated with moronic Daily Mail scaremongering stories like the volcano one earlier in the week, to keep us amused and derisory…

The sell off of UK SAR Helicopter assets to a private company will give conflict of ethics with one Rescue Service trying to make profit & the other trying to save lives on donations! RNLI Crews will be used as cheap canon fodder in Maritime Safety.

All the best in your attempt from myself and other people at BTiNet.

I personally look forward with hope and inspiration due to the people at Alder Hey Childrens Hospital who saved my little boys life.

Good Luck Trefor, think this is great idea for a good cause. Living in Scotland on the east coast i have seen the people of the RNLI do their stuff often, in the worst of conditions with little disregard for their own safety and wellbeing.
Hope you break the record!

Extreme Weather Events on the increase, more shipping will get in trouble. RNLI boats will face more challenging conditions & may not have back up of MCA Tugs or Rescue Helicopters as these set to be scrapped!

I have been supporting the RNLI for over 30years and never feared for crew safety as much as today with the plan to close 50% of UK Coastguard stations that coordinate all sea rescues. Loss of the vital Local knowledge will send crews search in wrong areas or even launching the wrong boats!

Here’s my contribution to the cause 🙂

Inspiration wise, I’d say that anyone who can follow their own map to do something innovative is a good example to look towards. I’ve been impressed with the Bus Tops (http://bus-tops.com/) project that Alfie Dennen, Paula Le Dieu and team are launching in London. It’s a creative way to provide art and non-commercial messages on the top of bus shelters, hopefully inspiring people in their daily lives.

Dedication. Dedication. Dedication.
That’s what you need.
If you wanna be the best,
and you wanna beat the rest.
Oo-ooh! Dedications what you need.
(Trumpet Solo)
Dedications what you need.
If you wanna be a record breaker. Record Breaker ooooooh!

This is a brilliant idea! My biggest inspiration of the past year has been my good friend Ted Hall (@tedwardhall) founder of LGHTSRC and tireless supporter/co-ordinator of the Occupy protests. As wacky as he can seem, his diligence, dedication and conviction is always incredibly admirable and I wish him the most amazing 2012!

Felt a bit guilty just commenting with ‘Good Luck’ so felt the need to add another!! Cant think of a more unique, fun way to raise funds and awareness of a very worthy cause. We are caravaners and wherever we go all over the country if we are near the coast, we make an effort to go and find the Lifeboat stations to make a donation.

Having grown up in the Orkney Isles on the north coast of Scotland and with a father who was a volunteer on the local lifeboat i cannot stress highly enough what a good cause this is. Many was a night my father would be called out at 2am in 120mph winds to save total strangers at great personal risk.

Great cause and here’s to the 100,000. Keep it up!

More power to your blog – my father was in the Merchant Navy for 26 years so any opportunity to help the RNLI gets my vote. Also, as an ex-tech geek, soak testing some servers is a bit of nostalga thrown in.

Good luck

K

Hi Louise, what a small world. We used to have a Doral on B pontoon. Still go down to Cobbs as quite a few of our friends still have their boats down there so might bump into you one fine summers day!! 🙂

The men and women who man the life boats around this little island are an inspiration, one of my early memories is being woken up in the middle of the night by my father when the 2 cannons went off, we raced down to cheer the brave people who went out in all weathers to rescue fellow humans in distress, bravo, lets raise as much as possible.

Go go go! Good luck and thank you for the service you provide. My inspiration is my 5 year old daughter who is currently battling a rare cancer. Hopefully this year will see her better and cancer free. Her journey will be a long one – requiring hip replacements throughout her life because of her cancer – but she’s strong enough to do it! You can read her story at http://www.JonisJourney.co.uk

An amazingly tasty macaroni cheese recipe:

50g butter
2 tablespoons of cornflour (or 4 tablespoons of plain flour)
1 pint of semi-skimmed milk
250g block of cheese
500g pasta

Stir the butter and the cornflour together over a high heat, until it’s a smooth mixture. Allow it to bubble while it’s mixing together, but do not allow it to scorch or burn. Once it’s a smooth mixture, add the milk and turn down the heat.

Continue to stir the mixture, making sure the spoon scrapes the bottom of the pan, while gradually increasing the heat. It should take you around 10-15 minutes to increase the heat to the maximum you can without boiling it. If the mixture is in danger of boiling or curdling then turn the heat down a little.

When the mixture starts to thicken add the cheese, which should be grated for maximum melting efficiency. Once the cheese is all melted in, add pepper to taste, add the cheese sauce to 500g of cooked pasta, stir and serve.

I think Dianna Abbott will make a difference in 2012, the difference being she’ll no longer be in politics, like she never should have been. Good luck chaps!

Can RNLI survive as a charity if closures of HM COASTGUARD stations increases their workload through inaccurate tasking and poor coordination? It will be too late to find out when they run out of funds or crews put in unacceptable danger: http://t.co/EOsGKeiP #MCA_cuts #stopHMCGclosures

Great idea and cause, all the very best with it.
You know, all you had to do was write something unbelievably controversial in the piece and you’d have got tons of comments! Works for some sites *cough Daily Mail cough*

Its day 5 of no nasty cigerettes and the crisp cupboard is calling me again!! If yesterday is anything to go by, I munched through 2 packets of Hula Hoops, one packet of cheesy wotsits, one packet of cheese and onion rigde crisps, a mint aero, a 4 finger kitkat and 2 packets of sour fruit pastle thingys .. all adding to 1145 calories whilst sat at my desk!! and that was before I got home from work and had my dinner with a glass of vino!! oh well, my lungs are very grateful but not sure what my digestive system is thinking right now!!

Comments, comments all the way. How many can we get in a day. One hundred thousand is the aim, no other number is the same. Come on lets give it all we got, before our efforts go to pot.

The engagement of the populace in the process of online expression is a laudable and indeed vital aim in the retention of our freedom in a climate of global fear and obsession with false security that governments are using as an excuse to enslave us.

I’d like to nominate Framework in Nottingham for their great working in helping the homeless and those at risk. The is an inspirational guy there called Chris Senior.

Good luck with the record attempt. I’ve spread the word for you on my various social networks.

I’d like to nominate Framework a Nottingham based charity working in the Midlands and Lincolnshire to help the homeless and those at risk. There’s an inspirational fellow there called Chris senior.

Good luck with the attempt. I’ve shared this on my social networks for you.

Hero’s each and everyone of you, putting your own lives at risk to save others. Good luck with the record, here’s hoping it’s a great start to a great year. Stay safe

24hours you say? Well it will only take a couple of big twitter-hitters to RT this for you and you will be well on your way, hope the spanking new servers will be cope. All the best of luck with the attempt though – am glad to play a small part in it and a big thank you from me for all the fantastic work the RNLI does throughout the year. Sally B – London.

Inspiration for 2012? The two ex-servicemen who have retrained as BSAC Open Water Instructors despite horrific injuries. We could do with more like them 🙂 Also anyone who volunteers as lifeboat crew – we could definitely do with more like them!!

@ Geordie “Should the RNLI have to depend on charity?”

Hi Geordie, a good question.
I’d say Absolutely Not, but without it I dread to think how many lives would be lost. In weather like were seeing today these brave men and women ignore risk to themselves in pursuit of saving others. Thanks to efforts like this one today we can at least highlight this ongoing funding issue as well as have some fun at a world record attempt.

How about a word association game? Or song lyrics? Something to get more posts faster. Remember though that responses need to be unique, a minimum of two words and ten characters to count…

I would leave something witty & clever, but, in a sea of 100K comments it would drown.
So, all I’m leaving is this:
These are not the droids you’re looking for. Move along.

If business and people started to pay the tax they are required to in their countries we would not have the current economic woes and that would fre more money for charity at home and abroad – Simples!

[…] In order for the record to stand, the blog will need around 100,000 unique comments in the 24 hour period which began at 6am this morning. Want to get involved? Leave your comment here[5]. […]

Good Luck. Will be interesting to see how the rate of posting increases as the day goes on. On the inspiration front, I admire what British cycling have done for the sport and its perception in the UK in recent years. 2012 is a big year with a lot of opportunity for UK cycling.

Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need – a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends, worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing.

Jerome K. Jerome

This comment is for my Granny who is currently ill in hospital. When she used to take us to Skegness when I was young, I remember visiting a cafe that had one of those RNLI money boxes where the boat comes down the ramp when you put the coin in the box. Funny how these things jog your memory.

The RNLI is definitely a great cause in need of support. I was a “Stormy Stan Fan” when I was younger. Then I was inspired and amazed by the big boats, now I am still inspired by the bravery and selfless giving of the RNLI Volunteers.

My gramps served for 60 years in the RNLI and was awarded and MBE for his efforts, and I love social media, so I think this is a brilliant idea, even if only 10% of people donated then it would still raise a lot of money for an invaluable service that is run mainly by volunteers!

Lunchtime check in. Seen plenty or ReTweets, needs the likes of @Schofe and @stephenfry to pick up and RT. Suggest a coordinated twitter message to them from as many people as possible as the odd message may not show up in their timeline. Also hoping our fiends in the US will pick this up as they come online shortly.

Good Luck!

Living in a seaside town, with an RNLI station, I often see the desktop pager going off and my thoughts are with the crew who are out there risking their lives to save others.

I’ve gone down and taken photographs of the launching boats before and I’d not want to even get close to the sea wall in some of the conditions that these guys go to sea in.

It makes me a little sad sometimes that it’s often people’s own foolhardiness that means the RNLI goes to their assistance. Those who go to see completely unprepared or in conditions for which they don’t have the experience to be out in…….

My father always gave generously to RNLI, so my donation is going in the envelope I received @ Christmas. Being survivors of the Canvey floods in 1953, probably had something to do with it as well 😉
I was also encouraged to take up swimming @ an early age by my mother, and qualified as a RLSS Scholar Instructor when I was 15 years old.
Living close to Southend (Essex , UK) – one only has to walk along the promenade to witness their presence. As we are experiencing gale-force winds today, I’m sure they are currently very busy!

I’ve just asked @JasonBradbury (Gadget Show)
“This RNLI charity ‘techie’ World Record attempt bit.ly/comment24 needs your help! Please RT. #comment24 #RNLI #Lifeboats”

We need some ‘big hitters’ to get involved!

All the best!
Hope you are utilising the power of social networking sites to get more people onboard.
Twitter alone could double your hits in a couple of hours.

**thumbs up**

This is a great cause – I have lots of happy memories of visiting lifeboat stations around the UK while on holiday with my parents – think I’ve been to most of the Welsh ones! Good luck with your attempt!

My mum has been a total inspiration this last year. Facing and recovering from major surgery, her cup has never been less than half full – a really trooper and an inspiration to her entire family.

Good luck with the challenge – RNLI’s a great cause with people risking their lives in all weathers to rescue many people who, in so many cases, have been ill-equipped and foolhardy to venture out in poor conditions.

A lot of these comments are outrageously polite, (Gary Fuller excluded) let’s try for a little colour here, folks! Prediction for 2012: bigger broadband pipes for the next killer app ‘Adverts on UK CCTV’ and partly cloudy, with a chance of showers in the afternoon.

Caroline – Yeah our techies have the radio on 🙂

Dunc – *shocked face* there is nothing wrong with spice gals but for now just put white pigeon on lol 🙂

The RNLI is amazing. It relies entirely on voluntary donations and I was always annoyed a few years back when the AA called themselves the ‘fourth emergency service’ in an ad campaign – not compared to the RNLI they’re not.

Yarrrgh, these be sharky waters. God bless the RNLI and their dedicated team of Shark Hunters. With your help we can rid the world of these killer beasts once and for all.

just saw a comment from Delboy, can I add my motivational quote to his?
Knowing is not enough; we must apply.
Willing is not enough; we must do.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Not entirely sure why Newark (Nottinghamshire) needs an RNLI branch….
… however, please note RNLIs ‘SOS Day’ of fundraising on 27th January.
Also there are a great many other RNLI branches around the country always looking for volunteers to help with fundraising – so consider if you could spend any time helping out (they’re not just on the coast – or even close to large bodies of water!) . And if the thought of coffee mornings and flagdays doesn’t appeal – you could still get involved and start organising the kind of events that you’d like to take part in.

Spice Girls vs Girls Aloud…
Indisputable Sass: Spice Girls Win
Good Looks: Girls Aloud Win
Music: We all loose 😉

Would Batman or Superman be more use to the RNLI…
Superman – he can fly and can not drown. Also, no need for distress flares, when you can fire laser beams from your eyes!

Bela – Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get to the other side.
This works as either a joke based on being ‘unexpectedly ordinary’ akin to
What’s brown and sticky? A Stick or What’s blue and fluffy? Blue Fluff
but could also work as a play on words that even if the chicken does not make it to the other side of the road (ie gets run over) the chicken will get to the ‘other side’ (as long as you believe in an afterlife for chickens.)

I’ve advertised the event on another forum used by tens of thousands of users at a time, so fingers crossed that may spread the word a little and help out!

Good luck with the world record attempt. My children have just gone outside to play to discover all their big bouncy mega balls are missing. It was soooo windy last night they could be in the next town by now!

When I was a little girl, my parents took us out on a trip in our then new sailing boat in Chichester Harbour. We didn’t know that there was actually a fault with the clutch and we were unable to properly make way through the tidal water. We had to call the RNLI who came out and rescued us, taking us back to our marina safe and sound. Ever since then, I’ve donated and contributed to every RNLI fundraiser I’ve come across. I hope it’s helped other people who got stuck 🙂

Launched Innov8Social in 2011 in a leap of faith . Inspired by bold compassionate social innovators like @greeneconomy @bcorporation @gtak @jennykassan @kylewestaway and all of the social entrepreneurs who are changing the world with their work. Hoping for success in 2012 in continued exploration of the field.

Good luck guys. I hope you don’t mind me dedicating this post to the memory of my late uncle Bob Bennett, of Wareham and formerly Gibralter, who designed the RNLI’s Tyne Class vessel.

I have a job prospect I am following up on today. If I am hired, I will be able to donate, and I will do so. Until I have a job, I will have to keep encouraging others to donate.

To make up for those not posting when they visit, then I shall have to do my best to keep relevant posts going to cancel out some of those rude people

RNLI & other volunteer rescue crews go out in any conditions! So think on next time It’s blowing Storm Force winds & check what’s happening, follow @outOnAShout or @RNLI or any of the stations on Twitter. Also check the campaign to save Coastal Rescue Centers here http://t.co/EOsGKeiP #MCA_cuts #stopHMCGclosures

I live in Poole and (Head Office for RNLI) and work for a company that services engines in their boats, I know how important the job that the RNLI do everyday, as they say, every little helps.

That’s a lot of unique entries and an awful lot of charity! Good luck with it all, also…

i can’t believe that the government don’t fund organisations like this or at least donate some money towards them including air ambulances and mountain rescue

Although I’m located the furthest away from our coast as you could possibly get, it’s us numpties that get into trouble when we’re on our jollies:) So good luck RNLI!

This is a great idea, I see the valuable work that the RNLI do in the South West when I visit Cornwall, keep up the good work! Good luck! #RNLI #comment24

The very fact that RNLI has been sustainably across through 3 centuries independent from any government agency speaks volumes. Lang may your boathouse lums reek!

The RNLI saved my mums life and ensured she was able to walk again with there fantastic helicopter and dedicated volunteers funded by fundraising like this!

Commenting from the uk’s first #cyberbarn in front of a very bemused customer and we wish you the best of luck with this world record attempt Tref! Oh and she says you are a bloody genius getting me in a dress for the tweet up 😉

there are at least 6 ferry routes to the Isle of Wight!! Why is the one that stops running due to bad weather the one you are waiting for? and then why, when it starts running again did i miss it because i was too busy talking to notice the boat was boarding!!!

Top tip: for those that cannot spare 10 or more characters, simply re-use previously typed characters from your copy buffer. This is both green and a money saving idea by reusing previous keystrokes and uses less computing power as a result.

I support the RNLI too with this comment!

The rules should have been highlighted or been put into some pretty graphics so that those eager to post a quick less than 10 word comment may notice it. Food for thought if we don’t get there….

Surfer Girl, isnt that almost kite surfing? which i bet would be good fun on a day like today.

Any Kite surfers here??? or even better, Any Kite surfers here that have been rescued by the RNLI???

Okeedokee, used the aOATH thingy (Sp) and read the whole thing, so here’s another ‘unique’ comment… said something about ‘worthwhile’ causes, so here’s a fave of mine, they don’t tweet yet, but, since you asked, http://SGIQuarterly.Org is a fave organization of mine, been trying to practice what they teach since 1989, and well, it’s all been good so far… they are a U.N. NGO, dunno if RNL does same, but NGO’s rock!… and BTW, anyone here also into the Earth Charter thing?… SGI had an even about them aeons ago (well, 1998, to be exact, October, if the Gingko Biloba I took was fresh this morning… or did I NOT take it!)… and nowadays, sustainability appears to be a #mainstream-ed keyword… so let’s keep commentin, I guess? c-ya!

After a ship sank in the ocean, three men ended up stranded in a lifeboat. They floated around for days without food or water. One afternoon a bottle floated up to the boat. The men grabbed the bottle and when
they pulled the cork out of the bottle, a genie appeared.

‘I’ll grant each of you a single wish,’ said the genie.

‘I wish I was home,’ said the first man. Then, poof! he disappeared.

‘I wish I was home, too,’ said the second man. Poof! He disappeared too.

The third man looked around. ‘Gee, I’m kind of lonely,’ he said. ‘I wish my friends were here with me.’

Guys please read the rules so that your comments count! 2 words or more and UNIQUE so no more solely ‘good luck’s!! Best of luck for the cause, my family have needed RNLI over the years and continue to support them.

Great idea, But were theres some conditions about where this can be advertised. I would have thaught getting this out wide on facebook will greatly improve responces. Also posting this out on some of the large public messageboards and forums would help.
Also why isnt BBC news or anything reposting this again that would help out ALOT!

I hope this comment helps you guys to hit the mark you need to reach. Will be telling all my friends and Twitter followers this evening to try and get you a few extra comments.

Have to say, this could have been promoted in other areas of the media than just tech columns/blogs though. Unless I’m missing something, I don’t see why the BBC didn’t pick up on this great fundraising idea and put their great weight behind it?

I have 3 fish and a frog in my fish tank at work. They need names.

Fish are as followed. any ideas for names for them all?

Orange fish
Blue Fish
Silver & Black Stripey Fish
and a grey Frog.

your suggestions are worth £1 to the RNLI

let have some ideas!!

What a good idea. I ran 26.2 miles to support the RNLI, I could have just sat at home and started a blog instead! All that pain!
Good luck man, I hope you do it. It’s a very worthy cause. 🙂

Good luck RNLI, my grandad haad worked on the lifeboat in Dunbar with his six brothers. So very proud of thhe work you all do and most of all a massive thank you 🙂

I’ve been a staunch support of RNLI ever since I started sailing, and especially so after I did my first solo sailing! Will be retweeting this – good luck with the world record!

The RNLI are brilliant! Living in a town where there’s an RNLI lifeboat, as I do, I just think it’s a shame they don’t send the flare up any more, to signify a shout. When they did that, we all knew what was about to happen and our thoughts were with the crew as they went on their heroic way! Good luck with the record attempt, btw 🙂

My some was rescued from the cliffs at Aberystwyth thanks to the coastguards. The RNLI should never be taken for granted as you never know if one day you may need them.

Dear Stuart,

If you’re of a technical persuasion, perhaps you might consider using the same naming convention used for your servers at work. Greek gods is a common one, and could be wonderfully entertaining when applied to small fish.

With that in mind…
Orange fish – mars
Blue Fish – neptune
Silver & Black Stripey Fish – mercury
and a grey Frog – Flora – which of course stands for frog, lord of remarkable aquariam

That’s a whole lot of comments you still need to collect. Bit worrying since we’re at nearly 5pm and you only have a couple of thousand from what I can see – you need to turn off Akismet so you get all the Russian spam 🙂

Ladies,

Let your hubby’s know about the blog when you get home. It will give them something to do while you watch, eastenders, corrie, emmerdale, one birn every minute, peter andre, etc etc.

[…] get involved, all we have to do is conduct over to a official universe record post and leave a comment. Alternatively, we can conduct directly to a official JustGiving webpage and oath some of your […]

Very best of luck with your record attempt and I hope you raise a good amount for a very deserving cause.

Hopefully everyone that comments will also post about this attempt on Twitter, Facebook etc for you too.

Best of luck once again,

Graham

Ahhh! I overselpt. I meant to get up really, really early so I could leave my comment – but was very busy last night, hacking away. I fell asleep with my face in the keyboard. This Mac Keyboard is much nicer to sleep on than your regular PC keyboards. Unlike conventional keyboards, a Mac Keyboard doesn’t leave as deep an imprint in the side of your head…

Still, I’m back at it – hacking away. Just wrote a jQuery colour wheel plugin 🙂

Home, home, home from the sea Angels of mercy, answer our plea And carry us home, home, home from the[ sea Carry us safely home from the sea.

On a cold winters night With a storm at its height The lifeboat answered the call. They pitched and they tossed Till we thought they were lost As we watched from the harbor wall. Though the night was pitch black, There was no turning back, For someone was waiting out there, But each volunteer Had to live with his fear As they joined in a silent prayer. [Repeat chorus]

As they battled their way Past the mouth of the bay, It was blowing like never before. As they gallantly fought, Every one of them thought Of loved ones back on the shore. Then a flicker of light And they knew they were right. There she was on the crest of a wave. She’s an old fishing boat And she’s barely afloat. Please God, there are souls we can save. CHORUS

And back in the town In a street that runs down To the sea and the harbor wall, They’d gathered in pairs At the foot of the stairs To wait or the radio call. And just before dawn When all hope had gone Came a hush and a faraway sound. ‘Twas the coxswain he roared All survivors on board Thank God and we’re homeward bound. [Chorus]

Fantastic cause indeed, I love to support the RNLI and have done for most of my life. Growing up near the sea does that to you. I used to sing in charity carol concerts for them – leaving a comment here is much easier 🙂 Good luck with the challenge.

Good luck from all at HUKD as an OAP myself im in full support, might need to take a blue pill to stay up all night to see the results on this one,

Good work

Guv ov HOT UK DEALS

Ps Elton Chong is my hero and im a big old zero, OAP to the GUV thats me

When we need you, you are there……… and now when you need us, where is everyone? HEEEEEELP! Target is miles off, please get everyone you know to come to the rescue of such a worthwhile cause.

What if I was to write a script, which wrote like me… and auto posted? Would that count – or would that defeat the record? In any case.. trying to build a script that thinks like me presents some interesting challenges…

Hmmmm…

I might do it one day… #RobBot

Great idea, fantastic cause! The work done by these great volunteers should always be recognised!!! I hope you raise lots of money, well done raising the profile of the RNLI and helping them continue their selfless, dangerous life saving work! 🙂

Phobia Support, hhhmmm.. Now there is a good question…
This has now become the “1001 things you cna do with rust” discussion!
1. How about collect the rust, mix it with aluminium to make thermite?

Having said that though – I need some serious hardware, akin to what @tref is running his world record attempt on in order to hit a comment every second….

And I guess that would give the game away – for if I was to post a comment every second…. well thats only slightly faster than I can physically type….

I’m having fish for my tea. I wonder how many fisherman have been saved by RNLI? Answers on a postcard… What is everyone else having for tea. Anything sea related?

Also I am sure you should have some kind of validation that stops people from just saying Good Luck. How are you going to count up the number of invalid comments … I’m feeling stressed 🙁

For @Kate Norman I don’t quite no…. Got to go to the shops. I attempted to bake a loaf of bread earlier… put it in the oven and forgot about it.

I now have a brick. One way to build a conservatory…

Mike Fuller – that was Rob Openshaw in Cambridge. He may have gone to Staffs Uni many years ago. He will not be posting for a while because his wife called him to go home for his tea!

Found you through the Guardian. The article said that comments about someone who’s inspired you, or an organisation who’s inspired you would be nice, so here goes!

One person I really admire and who’s been an inspiration to me is a lady called Janet. She’s in her 60s now, but throughout her life she has gone out of her way to help others. She lives in a house without central heating, hot water or even a fridge, but she’d give you the clothes off her back if she thought you needed them more.

She’s always there for others – the ill in the village, the elderly, anyone who needs a listening ear or some practical assistance. That’s despite the fact that some people tease her because she doesn’t conform to fashion and she looks a bit “alternative”.

She’s raised five kids on her own after her husband left and managed a smallholding as well as a job to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. And she still got herself further education and learned sign language.

To me she is a symbol of kindness, hard work and sheer determination. If only there were more people like her in the world!

Good luck with your efforts.

Come on Tref, there is a long was to go and the night is fast approaching in the UK ! Time to hit some contacts in faraway countries to continue the good work though the night.

Please make sure we all make the comments long enogh to count…just ‘Good Luck’ wouldn’t be enough for the count!…Best Wishes all in the RNLI Brave Fellas!..x

WE ARE SAILING…in a manner of speaking, into the RECORD BOOKS WE HOPE…copy and paste if you’ve no time to waste….Good Luck Guy’s n Girls of the RNLI

[…] Shoudl they reach their goal vital funds for the RNLI in the UK will be donated.  Help them out by QUICKLY heading on over to help set a world record! […]

Another comment, this time delivered over IPv6 🙂 Still no IPv6 at work but hopefully won’t be long!

Are you able to publish how many comments were made by IPv6 (better be more than this one)? 🙂

No Problem Bro’….anything to help for a ‘Good Cause’…xx…..Record A’hoy…Tally Ho and away we go…If you sail across the sea, all my love is there to guide you!…it’s a cracker!

The RNLI…

…whose arm hath bound the restless wave.
Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep…

Thank you for your fantastic work…you’re the real record breakers in my book 🙂

There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries. On such a full sea are we now afloat. And we must take the current when it serves, or lose our ventures.
William Shakespeare

But let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Khalil Gibran

Try this; Cut and paste the below but add the next digit, we could go on for ever 🙂

The number pi 3.141592653589793 – I have added one can you?

The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore.
Vincent Van Gogh

The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach – waiting for a gift from the sea.
Anne Morrow Lindbergh

This feels a lot like Brewster’s Millions – that classic film from 1985, in which Brewster has to waste $30million in 30 days in order to inherit £300 million…

The difficulty in trying to spend £30 million… you’d think it would be easy…

The sea is everything. It covers seven tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides.
Jules Verne

Here’s one extra to the target – awe and respect for the courage and dedication of the RNLI. I find it hard to believe that the greatest seagoing nation in the World has to rely on charity to save its sailors at sea. Long live the RNLI!

“There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain…” – not really my translation…. but a line I learnt years ago.

My choice was to go there and find him beyond all people. Beyond all people in the world. Now we are joined together and have been since noon. And no one to help either of us.
The Old Man and the Sea

It is good that we do not have to try to kill the sun or the moon or the stars. It is enough to live on the sea and kill our true brothers.
The Old Man and the Sea

I know what – I’m sick and tired of owning a house. So I could give my house away to the 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 ,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 ,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 person to make a comment?

Rob

I know – maybe people can leave comments on how I can legally, and cheaply get those that owe me money to cough up. I have half a dozen overdue invoices….

I thought about breaking legs – but that’s illegal.

@ Stuart,

I need to work out how to say 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 ,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 ,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 first…

Right, I am off for a run… I would like to see you over the 4,000 mark by the time I get back please Tref. That gives you 45 mins.

On your marks, get set… Go !

ok, it’s me. When can i expect to receive the house keys?

The rnli deserve as much money as possible. They all risk there lives everyday in weather thats always rough yet they do it because they care not for money.
Each and every one should have bravery awards.

What we need to do is say something really, really controversial that will start an epic flame war and gain mass media coverage.

So who should I pick a fight with? I’m not particularly enamoured with the French Government at the moment.

Gizmodo thinks we should debate whether Android or iOS is better (to fan the commentwars :-)), but, given the cause, maybe we should debate whether people who walk out to Cramond Island (near Edinburgh) should be rescued by RNLI or left out till the tide goes back down again 😉

How much wood, would a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood..if a woodchuck could chuck wood, how much wud a woodchuck chuck…

Nothing important, but every little helps 🙂

@Bela, he’s read them all…. when I wrote my dissertation, he got me into the back rooms of the British Library… had to wear gloves to turn the pages and everything!

The Americans are waking up? I’ve been dealing with a few who have been up for 5 hours already… think they might have already commented. But there are more Americans than Brits…. they’ll hopefully pull this thing up 🙂

@ Justice – the English FA? Is that Football… I’m not English… indeed if we showed up to school asking to play football, the games teacher would look upon us with an air of suspicion… as if we liked to wear our mothers clothes. Football is a game for wimps! #FLAMEWAR! 😀

Been tweeting some celebrity’s, Alan Sugar, Piers Morgan, the whole of 1 Direction and ive got a few re-tweets on other little things ive posted #comment24

@ Bela

A flamewar is the result of trolling… trolling is the deliberate attempt (online) to wind someone up… when this escalates and the hate is flying around, this is called a Flame War

They’re sometimes quite fun 🙂

But I’m no longer 18 years old…

Royal National Lifeboat Institution sounds like an amazing charity, can someone tell me more about their work in comments that consist of more than two words and 10 characters? And by someone, I mean everyone.

@ Steven Patrick you’re 17 years old, showing off in a playboat to some girls, and you paddle out to get some really, really big waves….

Only you get taken out to see, lose your paddle, get heavily sun-burnt, and cant get home. The RNLI will pull out, and give you a telling off as well 🙂

@ Bela, yes… only you’ll have to try harder. I have a ridiculous surname, which has got me into more fights than I can remember. Actually, I quite enjoyed them….

My Brother is a lifeboat-man, and my Sister-In-Law is on the Shore Crew at the RNLI in Clovelly.
I am so proud of them both, and of all the other brave men and women who give up their time, and potentially risk their lives, to help others x

Back at school, there was a chap who went by the name of Ginger Phelps. He had a magnificent ginger afro… which people would often ridicule him for.

He would then bash them….. properly bash them. Brake their noses – that kind of thing.

So I said to him one day – why don’t you just shave it off… it would stop a lot of hassle. He looked me up and down with a face like he was chewing a wasp and said “What are you? Gay? This Afro is a Beacon Of Pain – I keep it because it guarantees a scrap”

He wasn’t a “bully” – he just liked fighting.

I last heard he became an Investment Banker…

I’ve often thought for awhile that modern students are such a disappointment. They are far too concerned with books… far too sensible. Last week I tried to instigate a situation, and was told by s a spotty 18 year old that I really shouldn’t and its not the most sensible thing to do.

Pillock.

@Heather, it’s a lovely place Clovelly… Had the pleasure of staying in Joss Acklands house once when we were filming him… What a gent. The house also happened to belong in the past to Charles Kingsley who wrote The Water Babies whilst living there. And I stayed in the bed where Dame Dorothy Tutin once slept 😀

plz help these guys do this as a ex fisherman lucky never needed them but many friends have they do such a good job & are government should be ashamed not to be helping them out with costs, so plz help 🙂

My Mate Fat Eric and I had just launched something for someone – while at university – and went out to celebrate. On the way back from the pub, Fat Eric needed to take a leak… So he found what was some unassuming steps….

Out of nowhere the old bill arrived…. screaming and shouting “DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE”

I looked up…. Eric was peeing on the Police Stations doorstep…

Trefor is a quality name. What a disappointment if your parents named you Trevor and all you wanted in life was to be called Trefor. Yes, you can change your name by deed poll, but the first years of your life will be miserable. Then again, if you really wanted to be named Trevor and your parents gave you the f-word, you’d be equally disappointed. So it’s all about preferences, I guess.

I’d never heard of RNLI before, and am very glad to know they exist. What a wonderful way to get attention to them in order to support them. Good luck reaching the world record!

I rarely know what the heck I’m achieving on a computer, but I do support the RNLI. They do a fantastic job, & I may need them to retrieve the Old Boy one day, after all :-/

RNLI Rock. We have a lifeboat funday once a year down here at Mudeford Quay, Dorset, UK, probably other places too? Wonderful show of the great work they do keeping people safe at sea.

Then there was the time, in my final year of uni, when I received a commission to produce an animated short for one of the big terrestrial tv channels….

The uni wouldn’t let me submit it as a final piece unless I gave them the money I earned for the work… I told them where to go. Anyhow…. I was running out of time… had about 700 drawings to do in 3 days…. and was finding it hard to stay awake. So a mate of mine said “Get yourself some Pro Plus and Redbull”

So I did… Bought crates of the stuff. Must have drank something like 120 cans of redbull and packets and packets of pro-plus. I was sat at my light box… hallucinating… laughing… crying… going basically banana’s..

My mates were a little concerned – so dragged me to casualty, where I was put on a drip, and left to sleep it off. I was given the biggest telling off I have ever received in my life the next day by one of the Dr’s.. and I’ve not touched red bull or pro plus since.

I’d leave all the books you find in Poundland behind. Because that is where I buy all my books.

I’m illiterate, unfortunately. And blind. That’s why I support RNLI.

@ Justice – oh, I got a Dr’s note…..

Thankfully, they were running behind schedule, and so I was given another 2 weeks to get it done! I called in some favours – and we all hit it hard.

“‘You idiot!’ Hermione hit Harry on the back of his head. ‘You know that Potters are known for male pregnancy. You have to be extremely careful when having sex Harry. What happens if you get pregnant with Gambit’s child? Then what are you going to do?’ Hermione asked.”

I do feel privileged to be part of such a noble attempt at breaking the world record. Dignity is the key word.

Best regards,
Señor Spinoza (I know I’m not really Spanish, I just have a bad habit of signing off my letters in Spanish).

What if everyone posts 10 comments within the next five minutes with their favourite quotes or something? Or just paste stuff from their favourite song/book/movie?

Ok, I’m now going to select a random article on Wikipedia… This is exciting.

And the winner is…

Caught by the Fuzz!

“Caught by the Fuzz” was the first single by Britpop band Supergrass.

I wonder if comments saying only “good luck!” will count – they’re 10 characters if you count the blank space, so I guess they should. I’d add another exclamation mark just to be one the safe side, if I were you.

1 comment per second? I can do that myself! No, seriously, please help me out here. I’ll give you some of the money, promise.

//Chairman of the RNLI.

I have now changed my name. I have also changed my underwear and my sex (one follows logically from other). I feel very refreshed and ready to go on.

Life as a woman sucked. I’ve changed back to male. But did I change back to my old name? Fuck no! I beat the system, I can do anything I want now. I have no masters.

@ Bela, thats very tricky… guess it depends on how much you want to build bridges or not?

Or you could go just to see how old, fat and decrepit he’s become..

If ever there was a deserving cause, this is surely it. Brave men & women who go out, often in weather worse than can be imagined, to help someone in trouble. Good luck in everything you do!

I like A Taste Of Honey, but that’s probably because I’m a Smiths fan and Morrissey loved that one (yes, I’m equally pretentious as he is, but let’s not talk about that now).

Great cause, even better cause… Sorry, I have a habit of breaking into Sir Cliff every now and then.

And Cliff is cool! Don’t dare to suggest otherwise…

I hope everyone read the rules about what qualifies as a valid comment. Would not want any contributions wasted. And let’s see how strict the email format check is … ok stricter that that …

In the country of Westphalia, in the castle of the most noble Baron of Thunder-ten-tronckh, lived a youth whom Nature had endowed with a most sweet disposition. His face was the true index of his mind. He had a solid judgment joined to the most unaffected simplicity; and hence, I presume, he had his name of Candide. The old servants of the house suspected him to have been the son of the Baron’s sister, by a very good sort of a gentleman of the neighborhood, whom that young lady refused to marry, because he could produce no more than threescore and eleven quarterings in his arms; the rest of the genealogical tree belonging to the family having been lost through the injuries of time.

Closer to home in Malibu, CA, Rimes got her fix in a bright red number during the 4th of July weekend. To silence critics of her slight frame, she tweeted a bikini-clad photo of herself with the note, “CURVES….They are there LOL.”

Returning to Mexico to celebrate the holidays in December, Rimes wore a succession of barely-there bikinis, including a sparkly lavender number while cruising on a yacht on Dec. 19, followed the next day with a bright, white string bikini.

This is the first time I have ever made a comment on this or any other site. I wish to pay tribute to a brave and selfless group of volunteers who often put their own lives at risk in order to help others.

I can’t think of anything sensible to say on this, but, because of the money-raising element, at least my comment won’t be stupid AND gratuitous, like so many chatboard comments are…

Airline status can seriously test a romance, as lovers suddenly find themselves divided into elites or non-elites — with access to either lots of perks or just no-frills transportation.

If you’re the globetrotting spouse who gets an unexpected upgrade, should you keep it, offer it to your less-traveled mate stuck in coach, or just give it up all together?

“There’s nothing that says if the man gets it he should give it to his wife, or if the partner who travels more gets it they should give it to the one who doesn’t,” Post said.

Still, the person with the upgrade should consider what would be the best for his or her mate, she advised. But just because the frequent flier doesn’t offer up the upgrade, or winds up taking it, doesn’t suggest he or she is out of line or rude or not chivalrous, Post said

“This sort of almost falls into the category of babies on planes. It just stirs the pot,” said Gary Leff, a frequent flier who shares strategies for making the most of traveler loyalty programs on his blog, View from the Wing.

He is the frequent flier in the relationship — jetting off for business every week and accruing about 50,000 miles a year — so he often gets upgrades when he travels. She does not.

That sometimes leads to “you-take-the-seat-honey-no-you-take-the-seat” kinds of arguments when they end up booking a trip together in coach and discover Baird has received a last-minute pass to the premium cabin.

Baird, 43, feels it’s only right and chivalrous to let his fiancée have the upgrade, but Pallissard, 47, cringes at the thought of taking advantage of a perk Baird has earned through lots of arduous travel.

So when Baird was upgraded on a recent flight from Munich, Germany, to Chicago, Pallissard declined his many offers to swap seats and stayed behind in economy class.

“I felt terribly guilty. I kept telling him, ‘No, no, you’re the one who has been spending so much time on airplanes lately, you take the seat,'” Pallissard said.

“She’s my girl and my girl should get the upgrade,” he said. “I’m gone so much, I don’t get a chance to pamper my lady. So if she can sit with (a few) more inches of legroom for four hours, then why not?”

Other fliers are apparently not so generous with their mates. When the crew on Baird’s flight found out that he had given up his upgrade for his fiancée, they were floored, he said.

The flight attendants — who were so moved by Baird’s gesture that they snuck him free glasses of wine and a cookie from the premium cabin, he recalled — told Pallissard that business travelers are often perfectly content to relax in first class while their spouses sit in coach.

It’s a sentiment echoed on the message boards on FlyerTalk.com.
“Hubby has left me in the back on several occasions,” one flier posted.
“Wow, and you let him live? You must be a very generous person,” another poster responded.

“I cannot imagine why she married me after I allowed that to happen,” he wrote recently. Blank made up for it during a flight last month, when he gave his wife his upgraded ticket and sat in economy with their kids.

Jennifer, who used to fly more than 100,000 miles a year, was returning from Hawaii to New York with her husband two years ago when she qualified for an upgrade, but he did not. (Jennifer asked that her last name not be used for this story because she edits the Deals We Like blog and prefers to write anonymously.)

The couple decided she would take the comfy seat in business class and switch with him halfway through the flight. But he never came up to initiate the seat change and she wasn’t going to volunteer, she said. As a gesture of thanks, she asked a flight attendant to send him a “massive ice cream sundae” back to coach.

“Typically, if it is a short flight I will forgo the upgrade and sit with my husband if we both cannot get upgraded,” Jennifer said.
“For longer flights, I will never decline the upgrade. While I love sitting next to my husband, you just cannot beat a business class seat.”

But Leff also takes what he calls a “Captain Kirk” approach to the dilemma, likening it to the Kobayashi Maru training exercise on “Star Trek”: a seemingly no-win situation that Kirk solved by refusing to accept the constraints of the scenario.

“I reject the premise in which one of us gets upgraded, because the only acceptable solution is for us both to be upgraded and my job is to ensure that that is the case,” Leff said.

A proposed bill that will be debated in Tennessee would create a loophole in state schools’ anti-discrimination laws that could protect students who engage in harassment if it falls under their religious or political beliefs, opponents of the bill told CNN.

Supporters of the bill say their goal is to make sure whatever policies are implemented will keep in mind a student’s freedom of expression and protect the student from being punished merely for expressing their views so long as they aren’t threatening harm or damaging property.

“This bill clarifies that the policy may not be construed or interpreted to infringe upon the First Amendment rights of students and may not prohibit their expression of religious, philosophical, or political views as long as such expression does not include a threat of physical harm to a student or of damage to a student’s property,” the bill states.

But opponents say it will create an dangerous exemption that allows those who condemn homosexuality to openly harass gay students strictly because of their religious views without punishment – so long as they don’t actually harm them.

The bill, which was introduced in 2011 in the House and Senate, has gained attention after the conservative Family Action Council of Tennessee (FACT) announced it would be one of their highest priorities for the year. The sponsors of the bills did not return calls for comment about where discussion on the bill stood.

The group’s December newsletter says it hopes “to make sure [the law] protects the religious liberty and free speech rights of students who want to express their views on homosexuality,” according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Because of the specific protection requested for religious and political views, activists for the LGBT communities fear the law may be sending the wrong message to students that it would be OK to harass each other under the cloak of religious or political views.

On Wednesday, blogger and sitcom writer Kelly Oxford sent a tweet about the Republican race for the presidency that got a lot of folks asking: Is this God’s idea of a joke?

Oxford, whose Twitter feed was named by TIME magazine one of the 140 best of 2011, wrote, “Cain, Perry, Bachmann all claimed God told them to run for President, and all are out of the race. God is hilarious.”

It’s been reported that Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum have all suggested that God called on them to enter the presidential race.

After returning to Texas to “reassess” his campaign, Perry announced he’s not throwing in the towel. Judging by his poor showing in the Iowa caucuses and the debates so far, however, many political experts think it’s just a matter of time.

So what gives? Did the candidates misread God’s supposed message? Does the defeat of a divinely-inspired candidate necessarily contradict a message from God?

The person who has been most inspirational to me in 2011 is Jesus. Although He challenges me every single day He also gives me the grace and love I need to cope with those challenges. Times have seemed dark but He is always there. Mel, Newark.

WARRIORS OF THE SEA

Up goes the Lytham signal, St. Annes has summoned hands,
Knee-deep in surf the lifeboat is launched abrest of Southport Sands,
Half-deafened by the screaming wind, half-blinded by the rain,
Three crews await their Coxswains to face the hurricane.
The stakes are death or duty, no man has answered No !
Lives must be saved out yonder, on the good ship Mexico.

Did ever night look blacker, did sea so hiss before !
Did ever women’s voices wail more piteous on the shore,
But from three ports of Lancashire that night went lifeboats three,
To fight a splended battle, manned by Warriors of the Sea.
When on dark nights of winter, fierce storms of wind and rain

Howl round the cosy homestead, and lash the window-pane,
When over hill and treetop we hear the tempest roar
And hurricanes go sweeping on from valley to the shore,
And those we love the best on earth are gathered in our homes,

Think of the sailors round our coasts who, braving sleet and snow,
Leave sweethearts, wives and little ones when duty bids them go.
Think of our sea-girt Island, a harbour where alone
No Englishman to save a life has failed to risk his own
Then when the storm howls loudest, pray of your charity
That God will bless the lifeboat, and the Warriors of the Sea.

On the night of 9 December 1886, the German barque Mexico was wrecked at the mouth of the Ribble during a gale. Lifeboats were launched from Lytham, St. Annes and Southport to rescue the crew. Twenty-seven lifeboat men , fourteen of Southport and thirteen of St. Annes, perished. A third lifeboat, the Charles Biggs of Lytham, succeeded in reaching the Mexico and rescuing its crew of twelve. The RNLI said it was the worst disaster to befall the institution in its 187-year history.

Good Luck to Tref with the World Record Attempt and Thank You to all RNLI crews and lifeguards (Warriors of the Sea)

Great idea to raise money for a worthwhile cause. Hope lots of people comment so you reach your target. Heard your idea on Radio Lincolnshire which is such a great local radio station, everyone should listen!

Soo… I was curious… Iv just written a neat little python auto commenting spam bot and testing with a my own wordpress site.. Will these count if I turned on and took aim and fire? I reckon it can post around 50 a second easily… That should catch up overnight? What are the rules around this?

The Obama administration Thursday unveiled a new military strategy designed to guide the Pentagon at a time of greater fiscal pressures as the U.S. moves beyond the massive commitments of Iraq and Afghanistan and scales back military investments overseas.

Well we need 12,000 posts per hour for the next 8 hours to hit the 100,000 posts so that’s just not going to happen. I’m sure some will call this a failure however at this moment in time there have been over £5,700 in donations which in my book is a great success already.

The administration’s plan will reduce the size of the Army and Marine Corps, effectively limiting large-scale nation-building missions in the future and shrinking the U.S. military footprint in Europe. Defense officials said the Army, now at 570,000 people, is likely to be cut to about 490,000.

A suicide bomber blew himself up next to a large group of Shiite Muslims on a pilgrimage Thursday, one in a series of apparently coordinated sectarian attacks that killed at least 72 people in southern Iraq and in Baghdad.

Security officials said the bombings in two Shiite districts of Baghdad and near Nasiriyah, about 200 miles southeast of the capital, also injured at least 147 people. It was the highest one-day death toll since U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq last month and appeared to be deadliest single day of violence in the country in more than a year.

The bombings coincided with a political stand-off between Shiite and Sunni leaders that continued into its third week. A majority of the Sunni-supported political bloc Iraqiya boycotted parliamentary proceedings Thursday. And while Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite, gave another conciliatory speech stressing harmony, his critics said that behind the scenes Maliki is trying to dissolve a political framework established under U.S. guidance that was designed to share power among Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds.

“They’re busy doing the wrong things,” said parliament member Mahmoud Othman, an independent Kurd who said he was including all parties and sects in his critique. “They’re busy with conflict, day and night, and don’t have time for security.”

Terrorists are taking advantage of the vacuum, Othman said, and are willing to attack both Shiite and Sunni civilians to incite militias sympathetic to either side. “They want to create an armed, sectarian conflict.”

The bombing in southern Iraq targeted Shiites who were on the road to the holy city of Karbala to honor a venerated Shiite martyr, Imam Hussein. At least 48 people were killed in the suicide attack and more than 80 others were wounded, according to a provincial security chief.

We had:
1. Mix rust and aluminium, to make thermite
2. Used as a jewellers rouge (for polishing I think?)
3. To extract CO2 from coal fired power stations
4. For casettes…

Just before the bombing of the pilgrims near Nasiriyah, an Iraqi army officer spotted the assailant and tried to intervene, said the security chief, Sajad al-Asadi. The officer attempted to wrap his arms around the bomber and tackle him before he could detonate his explosives. The officer was killed in the bombing, Asadi said.

Just been watching the national weather forecast and wondered to myself how many times the RNLI will have been called out whilst this post has been going on?? Brave guys and a great cause…keep going!

The 100k was actually an arbitrary number. In my mind the number we have at the mo is high but whatever happens we have given it a good shot.

Depends whether I can persuade them. They have Facebook records with 100ks of comments but many we just punctuation marks & potentially left by machines. Hence the two word ten character rule.

@tref

So, maybe I’m missing the point here, but where is the killer news story that was going to wow a 100000 comments??

I really think you’ve missed a trick here!

Be lucky if you make 1/10th of that figure

A question on philosophy was probably a bit tough for first time out.

However in the absense of a record existing, then your total surely stands until it is beaten! – or we go again, but on a more controversial subject.

But whilst we are on a philosophy thread, Alan Titchmarsh got into trouble yesterday for suggesting that Gardening was more important than politics. I tend to agree with the little man, although the river bank has to give it a good run for its money.

To avoid being up for treason it is best to avoid commenting on the Royal family, however now that we are past the watershed, maybe a more raunchy provocation is required.

Guinness World Records, known until 2000 as The Guinness Book of Records (and in previous U.S. editions as The Guinness Book of World Records), is a reference book published annually, containing a collection of world records, both human achievements and the extremes of the natural world. The book itself holds a world record, as the best-selling copyrighted book series of all time.[3] It is also one of the most frequently stolen books from public libraries in the United States.[4]…

…The franchise has extended beyond print to include television series and museums. The popularity of the franchise has resulted in Guinness World Records becoming the primary international authority on the cataloguing and verification of a huge number of world records – the organization employs official record adjudicators authorized to verify the setting and breaking of records.[5]

….. History

Guinness certificate

On 4 May 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, then the managing director of the Guinness Breweries,[6] went on a shooting party in the North Slob, by the River Slaney in County Wexford, Ireland. He became involved in an argument over which was the fastest game bird in Europe, the koshin golden plover or the grouse. That evening at Castlebridge House, he realised that it was impossible to confirm in reference books whether or not the golden plover was Europe’s fastest game bird.[7] Beaver knew that there must be numerous other questions debated nightly in pubs throughout Ireland, but there was no book in the world with which to settle arguments about records. He realised then that a book supplying the answers to this sort of question might prove popular.

Christopher Chataway recommended student twins Norris and Ross McWhirter, who had been running a fact-finding agency in London. The brothers were commissioned to compile what became The Guinness Book of Records in August 1954. One thousand copies were printed and given away.[8] After founding the Guinness Book of Records at 107 Fleet Street, the first 197-page edition was bound on 27 August 1955 and went to the top of the British bestseller lists by Christmas. “It was a marketing give away—it wasn’t supposed to be a money maker,” said Beaver.[citation needed] The following year it was launched in the U.S., and it sold 70,000 copies.

…. Because the book became a surprise hit, many further editions were printed, eventually settling into a pattern of one revision a year, published in October to coincide with Christmas sales. The McWhirters continued to publish it and related books for many years. Both brothers had an encyclopedic memory—on the TV series Record Breakers, based upon the book, they would take questions posed by children in the audience on various world records and were usually able to give the correct answer. Ross McWhirter was assassinated by the Provisional Irish Republican Army in 1975.[9] Following Ross’s assassination, the feature in the show where questions about records posed by children were answered was called “Norris on the Spot”.

…. Guinness World Records Limited was formed and created in 1954 to publish the first book. Sterling Publishing owned the rights to the Guinness book in the 1970s and under their management, the book became a household name in the USA. The group was owned by Guinness Brewery and subsequently Diageo until 2001, when it was purchased by Gullane Entertainment. Gullane was itself purchased by HiT Entertainment in 2002. In 2006, Apax Partners purchased HiT and subsequently sold Guinness World Records in early 2008 to the Jim Pattison Group, which is also the parent company of Ripley Entertainment, which is licensed to operate Guinness World Records’ Attractions. With offices in New York City and Tokyo, Guinness World Records global headquarters remain in London, while its museum attractions are based at Ripley headquarters in Orlando, Florida.

… Evolution

Suresh Joachim Arulanantham is a Tamil Canadian film actor and producer and multiple-Guinness World Record holder who has broken over 50 world records set in several countries in attempts to benefit the underprivileged children around the world. Some world record attempts are more unusual than others: he is pictured here minutes away from breaking the ironing world record at 55 hours and 5 minutes, at Shoppers World, Brampton.
Recent editions have focused on record feats by human competitors. Competitions range from obvious ones such as weightlifting to the longest egg tossing distance, or for longest time spent playing Grand Theft Auto IV or the number of hot dogs that can be consumed in ten minutes, although eating contest and beer and alcohol consumption entries are no longer accepted, possibly for fear of litigation. Besides records about competitions, it contains such facts as the heaviest tumor, the most poisonous plant, the shortest river (Roe River), the longest-running drama (Guiding Light) in the USA, the longest-serving members of a drama series (William Roache for Coronation Street in the UK, Ray Meagher for Home and Away in Australia), the third longest-running drama (General Hospital) in the USA, and the world’s most successful salesman (Joe Girard), among others. Many records also relate to the youngest person who achieved something, such as the youngest person to visit all nations of the world, being Maurizio Giuliano.[10]

RNLI volunteers across the UK and Republic of Ireland are united by a willingness to commit time and energy to a cause about which they are passionate. It is because so many crew members, shore helpers, fundraisers and others are volunteers that such a high proportion of funds can be spent on first-class lifeboats and equipment.

Each edition contains a selection of the large set of records in the Guinness database, and the criteria for that choice have changed over the years. The newest records are added, and the records that have been updated are added too.
Banned from the record book is any feat which the editors feel cannot be duplicated, such as their 1997 refusal to include the first member of the US Armed Forces to get an Eagle Scout Award. Pvt. 1st Class Gregory A. Koval entered the Marines at age 17 during high school under their early-entry program & finished boot camp while still a Boy Scout. He was home on leave when his Eagle Scout Award was approved and awarded after he painted a church for his Eagle Scout project. PVC Koval’s Marine Eagle Scout was awarded to him under his USMC title, but since the odds of this feat being repeated was unlikely the book’s editors refused to list the young man’s accomplishment, even though the US Congress did officially note the award and applauded the young man’s insistence on finishing his Eagle Scout despite incipient deployment. The editors state if any feat is a one-time event not likely to be repeated there is no point in including it in the book.

The ousting of Norris McWhirter from his consulting role in 1995 and the subsequent decision by Diageo Plc to sell the Guinness World Records brand have shifted it from a text-oriented reference book, to an illustrated product. This shift means that the majority of world records are no longer listed in the book (or on the website), and can only be determined by a written application to Guinness to ‘break’ the record. For those unable to wait the 4–6 weeks for a reply, Guinness will process a ‘fast-track’ application for £300 (~US$450).

The Guinness Book of Records is the world’s most sold copyrighted book, thus earning it an entry within its own pages. A number of spin-off books and television series have also been produced. Again the emphasis in these shows has been on spectacular, entertaining stunts, rather than any aspiration to inform or educate.

Guinness World Records bestowed the record of “Person with the most records” on Ashrita Furman of Queens, NY in April 2009. At that time, he held 100 records.[11]

In 2005, Guinness designated 9 November as International Guinness World Records Day to encourage breaking of world records; it was described as “phenomenally successful”. The 2006 version was dubbed “the world’s biggest international event,” with an estimated 100,000 people participating in over 10 countries. The promotion has earned Guinness a whopping 2,244 all-new valid records in 12 months, which is a 173% increase over the previous year.[12]

Ethical issues and safety concerns

Steven Petrosino drinking 1 liter of beer in 1.3 seconds in June 1977.[14][15] Petrosino set record times for 250 ml, 500 ml and 1.5 liters as well, but Guinness accepted only the record for one liter. They later dropped all beer and alcohol records from their compendium in 1991, and reinstated the records in 2008.
Several world records that were once included in the book have been removed for ethical reasons. By publishing world records in a category, the book may encourage others to try to beat that record, even at the expense of their own health and safety. For example, following publication of a “heaviest fish” record, many fish owners overfed their pets beyond the bounds of what was healthy, so entries such as these were removed.[16] The Guinness Book also dropped records within their “eating and drinking records” section of Human Achievements in 1991 over concerns that potential competitors could do harm to themselves and expose the publisher to potential litigation.[17] These changes included the removal of all liquor, wine, and beer drinking records, along with other unusual records for consuming such unlikely things as bicycles and trees.[17] Other records, such as sword swallowing and rally driving (on public roads), were closed from further entry as the current holders had performed beyond what are considered safe human tolerance levels. Earlier editions also made reference to former King Zog of Albania holding the world record for amount of cigarettes consumed being c.150 per day.[citation needed]

There have been instances of closed records being reopened. For example, the sword swallowing record was listed as closed in 1990 Guinness Book of World Records, but the Guinness World Records Primetime TV show, which started in 1998, accepted three sword swallowing challenges (and so did the 2007 edition of the Guinness World Records onwards). Similarly, the speed beer drinking records which were dropped from the book in 1991, reappeared 17 years later in the 2008 edition, but were moved from the “Human Achievements” section of the older book[18] to the “Modern Society” section of the newer edition.[19]

As of 2010, it is required in the guidelines of all “large food” type records that the item be fully edible, and distributed to the public for consumption, in order to prevent food wastage.[20]

Chain letters are also not allowed. “Guinness World Records does not accept any records relating to chain letters, sent by post or e-mail. If you receive a letter or an e-mail, which may promise to publish the names of all those who send it on, please destroy it, it is a hoax. No matter if it says that Guinness World Records and the postal service are involved, they are not.”[21]
The Guinness Book of Records holds the record for the book most often stolen from libraries[citation needed].

Rested categories

On 10 December 2010 The Guinness World Records rested its new “dreadlock” category after investigation of its first and only female title holder Asha Mandela with this official statement:
“Following a review of our guidelines for the longest dreadlock, we have taken expert advice and made the decision to rest this category. The reason for this is that it is difficult, and in many cases impossible, to measure the authenticity of the locks due to expert methods employed in the attachment of hair extensions/ re-attachment of broken off dreadlocks. Effectively the dreadlock can become an extension and therefore impossible to adjudicate accurately. It is for this reason Guinness World Records has decided to rest the category and will no longer be monitoring the category for longest dreadlock.”[22]

The charity was founded, with royal patronage, as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck after an appeal made by Sir William Hillary. Hillary lived in Douglas on the Isle of Man, and had witnessed the wrecking of dozens of ships from his home.

God Bless the members of the RNLI. They represent everything that each of us should aspire to. After what has happened recently with MPs expenses and the summer ‘riots’ it became clear that a great many people across the social spectrum were only concerned with what they could do as opposed to what they should do. The members of RNLI surely epitomise a focus on what should be done – doing what needs to be done – they are an example to us all.

In 1891, the first RNLI street collection was held in Manchester. The 20th century saw the RNLI continue to save lives through two world wars. The lifeboats moved from sail and oar power to petrol and diesel, and the first women joined their crews

Bronze Medal for Gallantry
Coxswain Gary Fairbairn

On Friday 15 May 2009, Dunbar Coxswain Gary Fairbairn and Mechanic Kenny Peters were at the lifeboat station when the crew pagers went off at 5.07pm. The Coastguard advised that a yacht was in difficulty with two people onboard. As soon as volunteers Brian Cleator, Kevin Keillor, Stuart Pirie and John Watt arrived a few moments later, they went to launch the Trent class John Neville Taylor.

Bronze Medal for Gallantry
Mechanic Anthony Chambers

On Wednesday 5 August 2009, a call was received from Belfast Coastguard for both lifeboats at Portrush to launch. Two children were missing near caves in the Castlerock Downhill area. Members of the Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team had already heard voices coming from the caves, which were now filling with seawater.

Once at the scene, an attempt was made by the crew of the inshore lifeboat to enter the cave, but the swell was too high and the attempt had to be aborted. Drastic action was needed by the crew if the two boys were to be saved. All-weather lifeboat Mechanic Anthony Chambers volunteered to go in and attempt a rescue.

First gold medal

On 8 March 1824 the Swedish brigantine Carl Jean was in difficulties close to the shore near Christchurch, Hampshire, and was wrecked after 2 hours.

Captain Charles Fremantle RN was the first to attempt to get to the wreck and managed to reach her by swimming through the surf with a line fastened to his body.

The ship’s boats were cut clear but the rough seas filled them. Captain Fremantle suggested other rescue measures but the crew refused to act on them.

In his attempts he nearly lost his life when the crew on board didn’t throw him a rope but he returned to the shore with the help of a shore line by which he was hauled in.

Eventually the crew reached the shore using the wreck of the mainmast.

The most recent gold medal

The RNLI’s highest accolade, the Gold Medal, was awarded to Coxswain/Mechanic Hewitt Clark and Bronze Medals were awarded to Second Coxswain Richie Simpson, Emergency Mechanics Peter Thomson and Brian Laurenson, and Crew Members Ian Leask and Michael Grant for a service to the cargo vessel Green Lily on 19 November 1997.

Coxswain Clark demonstrated incredible skill in handling the lifeboat and taking her alongside the violently rolling casualty and rescued five men from the vessel in horrendous weather conditions.

Coxswain Clark manoeuvred the lifeboat in limited sea room, with 15m breaking seas and violent storm force 11 winds. When he finally drove the lifeboat clear with five survivors on board there was less than 200m to the shore.

The Maud Smith Award for the bravest act of lifesaving in 1997 was also made to Coxswain/Mechanic Hewitt Clark for this service.

A special RNLI Vellum was awarded posthumously to Coastguard helicopter Winchman William (Bill) Deacon who tragically died during this service. In addition a collective Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to the entire crew of the Coastguard helicopter – Captain Norman Leask, Co-Pilot David Gribben, Winch Operator Paul Mansell and Winchman Bill Deacon in recognition of their actions during the service to the Green Lily.

The youngest medallist

Frederick Carter (11) and Frank Perry (16) were each awarded a Silver Medal in 1890 for a rescue at Weymouth.

In a strong easterly breeze and heavy surf, a boat capsized in Weymouth Bay, Dorset and two men were thrown out.

Frederick Carter and Frank Perry were in another boat and they rowed into the broken water and saved them.

The last teenager to receive a Medal was Simon Peter Hall of Robin Hood’s Bay, when he was awarded a Bronze Medal for a rescue on 19 June 1979.

Simon rowed out in a small dinghy through breaking seas and saved a youth who had tried to swim ashore after a homemade raft had broken up.

At least 15 other boys between the ages of 12 and 19 have received Medals.

The first female medallist

The first woman to be awarded a Medal was Grace Darling, who was awarded a Silver Medal in 1838.

Lighthouse keeper William Darling and his daughter Grace, who was just 22 years old, risked their lives in raging seas to rescue nine survivors from the wrecked steamship Forfarshire on 7 September.

They rowed a coble through a howling gale and the seas tossed them about like a cork. Reaching the rocks, where the seas were surging over the survivors, William jumped out, leaving Grace to manage the boat on her own.

Five survivors were taken back to the lighthouse where Grace and her mother tended them, while her father and two of the rescued men returned to bring off the other four.

Both William and Grace received the RNLI’s Silver Medal.

Medal in memory

Several Medals have been awarded posthumously – in all two Gold, four Silver and 27 Bronze Medals.

The first was to Captain JM Boyd RN who lost his life in a service in 1861 when he was swept to his death off East Pier in Kingstown, Co Dublin, Ireland trying to save the crew from the brigantine Neptune.

The last posthumous awards were made to the crew of the Penlee lifeboat so tragically lost in 1981.

On 19 December hurricane force winds had blown the cargo ship Union Star off course after it suffered engine failure.

The lifeboat Solomon Browne launched into very difficult waters, so rough that the crew of the Royal Navy Sea King helicopter from RNAS Culdrose were unable to lift any of the eight crew from Union Star.

Coxswain William Richards made several attempts to get alongside and managed to rescue four people who jumped from the Union Star’s wheelhouse onto the lifeboat.

The lifeboat made a further attempt to rescue the remaining four when radio contact was lost. Her last message was: ‘We’ve got four off at the moment’. Ten minutes later her lights disappeared.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. We provide a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and RoI, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in England and Wales.

The RNLI operates over 160 lifeguard units around the coast of the UK.

We believe we can make a significant difference to safety on our beaches by providing an integrated rescue service from the beach to the open sea.

Rich Wright…..

Just completed my self indulgent hourly sweep of references to me on the internet, and saw your post.

I guess a Rich Wright is better than a Poor rong.

Good Luck Ya’ll

Grace became famous for helping her father to rescue the survivors from the SS Forfarshire when the ship was driven by a storm onto Harcar rocks on 7th September 1838.

Grace was awarded an RNLI Silver medal for bravery. Gold medals awarded to both Grace and her father from the Royal Humane Society and £50 from Queen Victoria.

Grace died aged 26 on 20th October 1842 from consumption which is another name for TB (an infection that affects the lungs).

She was buried in the churchyard in Bamburgh, Northumberland.

The RNLI founded the Grace Darling Museum in September 1938, exactly 100 years after her famous rescue. The Darlings became the most famous of all lighthouse families

Many books, poems, articles, paintings and even a rose were created in Grace’s honour
In the museum you can see the actual coble boat used by Grace and her father to rescue the survivors
The lifeboat at Seahouses in the North East of England is called Grace Darling

@ALY NYAN CAT THINKS YOUR A SELF CENTRIC ATTENTION SEEKER! THIS IS FOR CHARITY NOT PERSONAL GLORY!

Blue Peter is the longest running children’s television programme in the world and has been supporting the RNLI since 1958. During this time, Blue Peter has held four fundraising appeals for the RNLI which has funded 28 lifeboats at stations around the UK.

Rich if you leave a comment between 5am and 6am tomorrow, I will buy you lunch ! And if you fall asleep in my presentation tomorrow you will need to call Barak back for help 🙂 night.

In May 2007, Blue Peter received an RNLI Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Kent. To date, these lifeboats have launched more than 4,600 times and RNLI volunteer crews have saved over 1,030 lives.

THAT WAS A TERRIBLE DISS ALY. YOU CLEARLY AREN’T VERY SMART!

Lifeguards come from many walks of life.

Most are employed on a seasonal basis.

Some are volunteers meaning that they work without getting paid.

Lifeguards do fitness and rescue training every day so that they are ready for an emergency situation at any time.

Did you know that RNLI Lifeguards assisted 18,775 people during 2010 and saved 107 lives?

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is a charity that saves lives at sea around the coasts of Great Britain, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, as well as on selected inland waterways.
The RNLI was founded on 4 March 1824 as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, with Royal Patronage from King George IV of Great Britain and Ireland. It was given the prefix ‘Royal’ and its current name in 1854 by Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland. It has official charity status in both the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.[1][2]
The RNLI operates 444 lifeboats (332 are on station, 112 are in the relief fleet), from 235 lifeboat stations around the coasts of Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. The RNLI’s lifeboats rescued an average of 22 people a day in 2009. RNLI lifeboats launched 9,223 times in 2009, rescuing 8,235 people. The RNLI’s lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved more than 139,000 lives since 1824.[3] RNLI lifeguards placed on selected beaches around England and Wales, aided 15,957 people in 2009. The RNLI Operations department defines ‘rescues’ and ‘lives saved’ differently.[3]
In 2009, the RNLI Lifeguards service was expanded to cover more than 140 beaches.[4] RNLI lifeguards are paid by the appropriate town or city council, while the RNLI provides their equipment and training. In contrast, most lifeboat crew members are unpaid volunteers. The RNLI is funded by voluntary donations and legacies (together with tax reclaims), and has an annual budget of £147.7 million (€168 million).
There are other Lifeboat Services that are independent of the RNLI, available to the coastguards that provide lifesaving lifeboats and lifeboat crews 24 hours a day all year round.

Memorial in Douglas, Isle of Man, to one of RNLI’s earliest rescues: rescuing the sailors from the St George in 1830.
Sir William Hillary came to live on the Isle of Man in 1808. Being aware of the treacherous nature of the Irish Sea, with many ships being wrecked around the Manx coast, he drew up plans for a national lifeboat service manned by trained crews. Initially he received little response from the Admiralty. However, on appealing to the more philanthropic members of London society, the plans were adopted and, with the help of two Members of Parliament (Thomas Wilson and George Hibbert), the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck was founded in 1824.
Thirty years later the title changed to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the first of the new lifeboats to be built was stationed at Douglas in recognition of the work of Sir William.
At the age of 60, Sir William took part in the rescue, in 1830, of the packet St George, which had foundered on Conister Rock at the entrance to Douglas Harbour. He commanded the lifeboat and was washed overboard with others of the lifeboat crew, yet finally everyone aboard the St George was rescued with no loss of life. It was this incident which prompted Sir William to set up a scheme to build The Tower of Refuge on Conister Rock – a project completed in 1832 which stands to this day at the entrance to Douglas Harbour.[5]
In its first year, the RNLI added 13 boats to the existing 39 independent lifeboats.[6] By 1908 there were 280 RNLI lifeboats and 17 independents.
[edit]In action

Weston-super-Mare lifeboat station has the longest lifeboat slipway in the country. However, due to the age of the slipway, it is no longer used, and the two lifeboats stationed there are launched from the other side of the pier, down the beach.
Since the RNLI was founded, its lifeboats have saved over 137,000 lives (as of November 2006).[7]
The RNLI operates three classes of inshore lifeboats, both inflatable boats and RIBs, of 25–40 knots, and five classes of all-weather motor life boats, with another (FCB2) currently in development, with speeds ranging from 17 to 25 knots. It maintains 332 lifeboats based at 235 lifeboat stations. It also has four hovercraft, introduced in 2002, allowing rescue on mud flats and in river estuaries inaccessible to conventional boats. The crews of the lifeboats are almost entirely volunteers. The 4,600 boat crew members, including over 300 women, are alerted by pagers and attend the lifeboat station when alerted.
The Humber Lifeboat Station at Spurn Point, East Riding of Yorkshire is one of only four lifeboat stations in the UK which are crewed full time (the others being Tower at Waterloo Bridge, Chiswick and Gravesend, all on the River Thames). The crew live in a few houses on Spurn Point, which in bad weather can be cut off from the mainland. The other occupants of Spurn Point are Associated British Ports, who man their Vessel Traffic Service control tower 24 hours a day, 365 days a year along with the lifeboat crew.

Severn class lifeboat, Poole Harbour, Dorset. This is the largest class of UK lifeboat, at 17 metres (56 ft) long.
Throughout Ireland and Great Britain, ships in distress or the public reporting an accident must contact the emergency services:
by telephoning 999 or 112
on medium frequency (frequency 2,182 kHz),
or on VHF radio (channel 16)
The call will then be redirected to HM Coastguard or the Irish Coast Guard, as appropriate.
The Coastguard co-ordinates air-sea rescue and may call on the RNLI (or other lifeboats) or their own land-based rescue personnel or rescue helicopters to take part. Air-Sea rescue helicopters are provided by CHC Helicopter,[8] the R.A.F., the Royal Navy, the Marine & Coastguard Agency (HM Coastguard), and the Irish Air Corps.
The biggest rescue in the RNLI’s history was 17 March 1907 when the 12,000 tonne liner SS Suevic hit the Maenheere Reef near Lizard Point in Cornwall. In a strong gale and dense fog, RNLI lifeboat volunteers rescued 456 passengers, including 70 babies. Crews from The Lizard, Cadgwith, Coverack and Porthleven rowed out repeatedly for 16 hours to rescue all of the people on board. Six silver RNLI medals were later awarded, two to Suevic crew members.[9]

The Different classes of Lifeboats RNLI_lifeboats.
The RNLI has two main categories of lifeboat:
All-weather boats
Large boats that weigh in excess of 40 tonnes, boasting twin 1250hp engines, capable of traveling at speeds of 25 knots and with a 250 mile operational range between refueling and costing a total £2million to manufacture
Inshore lifeboats
Smaller boats that operate closer to the shore than all-weather boats and are able to operate in shallower waters and closer to cliffs.
[edit]Losses

Lifeboat crewmen have been awarded medals for their bravery. The RNLI awards three classes of medal; Gold, Silver and Bronze. To date the number of medals awarded are:
Gold: 150
Silver: 1564
Bronze: 793 (only issued since 1917).
One of the most notable recipients is Henry Blogg, of the Cromer lifeboat crew, who was awarded the RNLI gold medal three times (and the silver four times). He also received the George Cross and the British Empire Medal. He is known as “The Greatest of all Lifeboatmen”.
The youngest recipient of an RNLI medal was eleven-year-old Frederick Carter who, along with sixteen-year-old Frank Perry, was awarded a Silver Medal for a rescue at Weymouth in 1890.
The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum is also given for notable acts.
One lifeboat received an award. For the Daunt lightship rescue in 1936, the RNLB Mary Stanford and her entire crew were decorated.[10]
Grace Darling was 22 years old when she risked her life in an open boat to help the survivors of the wrecked SS Forfarshire on 7 September 1838. With her father, she rowed for over a mile through raging seas to reach them.[11]

Nyan Cat is the name of a YouTube video uploaded in April 2011, which became an Internet meme. The video merged a Japanese pop song with an animated cartoon cat with the body of a Pop-Tart, flying through space, and leaving a rainbow trail behind it. The video ranked at number 5 on the list of most viewed YouTube videos in 2011.[1]

Origin

Animated GIF
On April 2, 2011, the GIF animation of the cat was posted by 25-year-old Christopher Torres of Dallas, Texas, who uses the name “prguitarman”, on his website LOL-Comics.[2] Torres explained in an interview where the idea for the animation came from: “I was doing a donation drive for the Red Cross and in-between drawings in my Livestream video chat, two different people mentioned I should draw a “Pop Tart” and a “cat”.” In response, he created a hybrid image of a Pop-Tart and a cat, which was developed a few days later into the animated GIF.”[3]
The Song

The original version of the song “Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!” was uploaded by user “daniwell”[4] to the Japanese video site Nico Nico Douga on July 25, 2010.[5] The song features the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku (初音ミク?). The Japanese word for the sound cats make, “nyā” (にゃあ?), is the equivalent of the English language word “meow”.[6][1]
A user named “Momo Momo” (“もももも”) uploaded a remixed version of the song “Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!”, adding the repeating vocal sound “nyan” throughout the song, to Nico Nico Douga on January 31, 2011.[7] The added vocal sound was created using the singing synthesizer software UTAU with the voice preset, “Momone Momo” (桃音モモ).[8] The UTAU voice preset, “Momone Momo”, gets its name from the kanji “momo” 桃, meaning “peach”, and “ne” 音, meaning “sound”.[9] The voice source used to create the Momone Momo voice was Fujimoto Momoko (藤本萌々子?), a Japanese woman who lives in Tokyo.[10]
YouTube Video
YouTube user “saraj00n” combined the cat animation with the “Momo Momo” version of the song “Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!”, and uploaded it to YouTube on April 5, 2011, three days after Torres had uploaded his animation, giving it the title “Nyan Cat”.[1][3] The video rapidly became a success after being featured on websites including G4 and CollegeHumor. Christopher Torres said: “Originally, its name was Pop Tart Cat, and I will continue to call it so, but the Internet has reached a decision to name it Nyan Cat, and I’m happy with that choice, too.”[3]
Popularity

The Nyan Cat music video reached ninth place in Business Insider’s top ten viral videos of April 2011, with 7.2 million total views.[11] The original YouTube video has received over 55 million views as of December 23, 2011. Due to its popularity, many new remixes and cover versions have been made, some hours long. There are also ringtones, wallpapers and applications created for operating systems including Windows 7,[12] Nokia,[13] iPhone, iPad,[14] Android,[15] HP webOS.[16] and Windows Phone 7.[17] In December 2011, “Nyan Cat Adventure” was released for Xbox Live Indie Games.[18]
Christopher Torres has criticized the website nyan.cat, which features a similar-looking cat with the same background music. The site, which uses the .cat sponsored top-level domain, has been described by Torres as “plagiarized”.[19][20]
Temporary DMCA Takedown

On June 27, 2011, the original YouTube video was taken down from the site following a Digital Millennium Copyright Act complaint from someone claiming to be prguitarman, the creator of the GIF animation. Christopher Torres (prguitarman) immediately denied being the source of the complaint, and contacted Saraj00n and daniwell, who hold the copyright for the video and the song, in order to file a counter-complaint to YouTube. On June 28, 2011, the video was restored to YouTube. During the period that the video was unavailable, Torres received hate mail from people who wrongly believed that he was the person behind the DMCA takedown notice.[21]

Hello everyone. Tonight I have been conducting an experiment for my anthropological research on internet blogs. I took up the false persona of the annoying Nyan Cat to study the reactions an internet troll ie nyan cat creates. Thank you for your help. And I seriously wish this worthy cause all the success in the world! Sorry for any inconveniences. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Professor Nyan

The problem being that soon my comments will consist of nothing but dufhdsfdsjfh where by head is hitting the keyboard from falling alseep on it

Oh would that we could shine a beacon in the hunt for your lost dog Pauline; but we are based at celestial coordinates 19:19 right ascension, 21 degrees declination as measured from your planet.

Sadly Christmas has yet to reach the constellation of Vulpecula – but we get illicit supplies of Branston pickle courtesy of some smart smugglers and their spaceloaders

Ah, Tea – we get lots of tea (green) and curry (green) and oak (green) and snow (green) and the list goes on. But we also have spectacular rainbows (green)

Yes – the village was deserted in about 1690 when the entire fishing fleet with all hands was lost in a storm. The widows and the remaining families all moved away and left the village deserted. No rnli then

Mind you, the good ladies of Port Quin, on seeing an LGM (and a grockle at that) scampering along the harbour wall, might have fled anyway

Hay Pauline – Nos Da (good night in Welsh) & and may your fave LGM say Diolch (Thanks in Welsh) for your outstanding contribution tonight. Hope the wee canine returns safe

Well, Little Green Men need a Little Green Sleep – so we’ll wish you all a safe journey wherever you go. Thanks to all who support the rnli

THE MEXICO BARQUE by Corncrake Williams

Listen without to the westerly wind
Does it whisper and gently sigh?
Or rage and roar, shaking the door
Demanding that seafarers die…

On such a night in the distant past
As surf raced hight up the beach
Mexico barque on a bank was fast
No port that night would she reach

Three lifeboats to her aid were sent
By fisherman manned with good intent
One boat returned her crew to save
The others would drown in a watery grave

Father and son, brothers too
Perished that night in the lifeboats’ crew
Seven and twenty died they in vain?
Question it not, they would do it again

******************************************
On the night of 9 December 1886, the German barque Mexico was wrecked at the mouth of the Ribble during a gale. Lifeboats were launched from Lytham, St. Annes and Southport to rescue the crew. Twenty-seven lifeboat men , fourteen of Southport and thirteen of St. Annes, perished. A third lifeboat, the Charles Biggs of Lytham, succeeded in reaching the Mexico and rescuing its crew of twelve. The RNLI said it was the worst disaster to befall the institution in its 187-year history.

Good Luck to Tref with the World Record Attempt and Thank You to The RNLI

Guess that I may be the last one to submit a comment.. it is now 05:59am

Well Done Tref!

Thanks very much to everyone who took part. Today I have to put the submission together and then it takes a few days but it has been a fun event. Anyone with a comment at 6am can mail me their address and I’ll send them a mug:)

And now I feel like a fool.. Just noticed this record ended at 06:00am and not 09:00am as my brain was telling me!

Tref, I think you should re-launch the record later in the year…. Set it going on the same day as the Olympics or Euro 2012 (don’t know why other than they are big events taking place…..)

Between now and then we should all help you raise awareness (using this blog to co-ordinate of course!) and really publicise the fact that you’re going for the record.

I think if you get enough of an awareness going (perhaps start a Facebook group) the qty of people helping you to go for this would be enough to smash your record to pieces!!!!

/Discuss people, who’s up for helping to annihilate this record?!

One unique post per person in the UK is all it would take.

Raise awareness with big companies, let them advertise on said website… Display their corporate logos, get them to “allow” their staff to submit an entry during working hours….

There was more money raised that there were comments! So Tref’s aim of a minimum of £1 per comment was met. Well done for everyone who took part to raise awareness and money for RNLI. I’d defiantly take part again but it does make you realise just HOW many comments a second it takes to break this world record.

The RNLI has enough money that if today they no longer received a penny more, they could sustain themselves for the next two years. No other charity has funds of that size.

However I guess the RNLI has another pound to play with now.

[…] World record attempt for most comments on an online news item in 24 hours >> Trefor.net […]

Great idea – not least because you chaps are going to be 20 times busier when the coastguard system gets made into a call centre ;-( Keep up the great work!

Timico mugs handed out at 6 AM GMT this morning earth time on conclusion of the commentfest – but the space/time displacement continues and so do we…

Hopes Pauline has good news on lost K9

great to see someone going for a world record.. In some small way, I hope that my comment helps you get across the finishing line and smashes the current world record whatever that is..

#comment24

best of luck
