FTTC Broadband Exchange Rollout Dates Update – Phases 4b and 5 Summer 2010 and Onwards

Never a dull moment on this blog so here are is the next bit of excitement for  today.  This is the list of exchanges to be covered by phases 4b and 5 of the FTTC broadband rollout plan between summer 2010 and summer 2011 and follows on from a previous post with the list for phases 1 – 4.

Together with the current published exchanges these latest names will provide coverage to ~6.3 million homes and premises.

BT have specifically asked me to write in blood that these are very much subject to change so don’t go believing everything I write (difficult concept I know 🙂 )

“Update from 18th March – a complete list of exchange availability dates is now held on the trefor.net fttc page. This is updated as I get news in from BT.”

I feel your pain gd

Still no sign of my exchange either – Easington

Smack bang in the middle of two major cities/towns (Sunderland & Hartlepool) and 2 mile away from a town which does have LLU (Peterlee) and yet we’re still treated like middle of nowhere as well.

Moving house tomorrow and having to resort to a ADSLMax ISP costing twice as much as Sky’s unlimited offer was going to *sigh* 🙁

It isn’t on the list yet John so no time soon I’m afraid. I know it won’t be any comfort whatsoever but Liverpol isn’t even on the list. I’d write to your MP if I were you complaining.

Anyone know where I can find a rollout update in BT land?

I really want to order some sort of broadband here in the Hambleden valley and I know Henley has been on the list of exchanges to be upgraded this summer.

I live in Southampton, run off the Moorehill Exchange. All the surrounding area’s (Eastleigh, Chandlers Ford, Fair oak, Totton – all outer suburbs of Southampton) have dates, but none what so ever in Southampton. I want to get off Virgin’s broken net work as soon as possible. Any one know when the next batch of exchanges are going to be announced?

Hi Tref, few questions which I hope you can help with. My exchange (Hardingstone) has still not been announced in any plans for the BT fibre rollout. Are you aware of any updates on this situation? I understand phase 6 will be released in the coming weeks, is this true, and if so have you any specific dates? I don’t know much about fibre etc, but I was wondering if you were aware of any pattern in the rollouts i.e. by homes served for example. Hardingstone serves around 19,000 properties so it’s not a small area by any means (as far as I am aware). Also I have read something about Communication providers being able to nominate a list of 6 exchanges for Phase 7. What exactly does this mean? By communication providers, I suppose this means BE, Talktalk, Sky etc, in which case will these nominations have advantages for any particular exchanges, for example areas where these providers have the highest number of customers. Sorry for all the questions but I really hope you can help, or anybody else on this forum! I am sick of the lousy speeds I am getting, in comparison to place that now have up to 40MB. Grrr! Thanks very much in advance.

And finally… I am around 3 miles away from the exchange at the moment, and I know that broadband speed is proportional to distance from exchange at the moment, but will this be the case for fibre, or will all properties within a particular exchange be able to achieve the same speeds? Thinking of moving 2.9 miles down the road. Thanks, Mark

Mark
I have been promising to update the list & schedule for some time so I will do it tomorrow. I’ll also give BT a call to check on what you are saying re next phases.

They do ask Comms Providers (Timico is one of them) for lists of exchanges we would like them to enable. I always say my home town of Lincoln and they never seem to listen!

That said I will also ask about that 6 exchanges and the due date for the next phases and get back to you here.

As far as distance from the exchange goes it is the distance from the cabinet that matters. The connection between the cabinet and the exchange is 1Gbps fibre with no line loss.

However the link between the cabinet and your house is copper which does cause performance deteriation with line length. During the trials the average speed seen was around 25Mbps if my memory serves me. With more connections now there will probably be better data so I will also check up on that in the morning.

So you need to find a house near a cabinet not near the exchange 🙂

Right Mark I’ve updated the exchange availability dates (find it here http://www.trefor.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/exchanges.htm). There are 46 more exchanges than in my previous list which was from April. Unfortunately yours is not on it. I have put in a call to our BT Wholesale technical account manager and whilst he has not yet heard of phases 6 and beyond being announced he will ask the FTTC product manager.

The next update is due in November – on the basis that they seem to be published quarterly. I’ll specifically look out for that and post it as soon as I see it.

Don’t expect fast moving changes here though. Openreach, which is the organisation putting the network in, is a slow moving giant.

My guess is that new exchange announcements, as opposed to just schedule updates (ie which exchanges have slipped) will probably be accompanied by a huge BT fanfare declaring to us all how much more money they are putting into fibre Next Generation Access.

Tref, thanks a lot for the information… OK well when you propose your home town of Lincoln, don’t forget to make Hardingstone another one of your choices 😉 Well 25Mb is a damn sight better than the 2.5Mb I am getting at the moment! Hmmmm, 4 cabinets I assume evenly spread out across the exchange, or is there some sort of pattern? Either way I would hope that I get closer than 3 miles to one of the cabinets, which is where I am at now! I REALLY hope Hardingstone is on the agenda for this rollout! I feel desperately sorry for those that won’t be, and I just hope it isn’t me! Would be great if you could get back to me (by email if possible) to let me know what the FTTC product manager has to say? Thanks, Mark

New update – Phase 6 details are due Oct 2010, with Phase 7 likely to be Q1 next fiscal – ie April/May/June 2011.

There was a consultation call last week with BTWholesale to obtain input from CPs regarding identifying 6 exchanges to propose back to Openreach as to where fibre should be delivered to. This was restricted to eligible ISP’s, that have supported us with FTTC trials and rollout. This call included an invite to CP’s to influence the rollout up to 6 exchanges.

Unfortunatley whilst eligible I missed it hence not knowing about the next Phase. I think I must have been out racing pigeons! I do have more detailed exchange v cabinet info but I’m not sure it is of any use – the cabinets are numbered but don’t cross refer to postcodes/streets. I’ll see what I can do.

News just in – Openreach are potentially going to announce the next phase (Phase 6) of the FTTC rollout at their regular Trialist Working Group (TWG) which just happens to be Wednesday next week.

If this is the case then I will probably find out on Thursday afternoon. You heard it first on trefor.net (don’t get too excited though – bird in the hand and all that)

Tref, been doing a bit more research, and is there absolutely no way I could get fibre optic at my property when BT have not laid down the foundations. I have read something about FTTH (fibre to the home as I am sure you know), but I assume this technology is ridiculously expensive. Is there no way around having to wait for this Openreach rollout?

Not easily Mark. Businesses put fibre in but it costs thousands of pounds up front – usually the digging the roads cost.

If you are in an FTTC area but you are not fed from a cabinet then BT will be providing FTTP next year sometime. This will run either through a duct to your premises or more likely on the overhead cable via a pole.

If you have a pal somewhere that does have fibre or FTTC then you might be able to set up a fixed wireless link between you and him and then share his connection. This would involved set up costs but it is what the farm in Yorkshire did where we released the pigeons last week. That farm had a wireless link to a village two miles away – albeit with a very slow ADSL at the other end of the link.

Hmm, it’s all very interesting stuff.. I am just very worried that over the 60% of households that will be covered with FTTC by 2015, mine won’t be one of them! How many thousands of pounds would you think we are talking about? Are there any companies in particular that specialise in such work and could provide a quote? I do have LLU enabled at my exchange, but from what I have read that won’t make a difference to my speed as I am still quite far away from the exchange. Is this correct? Are there any other options. Thanks very much for your help.

I’m in Daventry and have had terrible ADSL for years despite living on a new estate (sub 10 years). Good news is that our exchange now has a RFS date of Mar 2011, but how do I find out if our estate is one planned to be upgraded – Lang Farm – (I don’t think I could bear it if it wasn’t!) – I’d sign up today at almost any cost if it became available – Now wishing the months away. Tim.
