2010 Graduate Training programme at Timico

This spring I’m looking to take on a graduate to work in the Network Operations team as part of the 2010 Graduate Training intake. I’ll put together a job spec but in the meantime if anyone knows of an engineering student about to sit his or her finals please point them my way.

This will be a great opportunity for an aspiring tecchie wanting to get into the internet industry.  Our NetOps team has challenging work thrown at them, not least because of the pace at which the company is growing.  Check out the Timico website for our credentials. I would expect the successful candidate to grow rapidly in knowledge and experience – far more so than if they were working for large slow moving organisations.

A wide variety of skills are needed in the Network Operations department of an ISP based around the core disciplines of network engineering, systems administration and software development.  Whoever joins us will get exposed to all three areas and probably begin to specialise downstream, based on progress and aptitude.

Interested persons can contact me directly by email at tref at timico.co.uk.

Timico makes top 25 fastest growing tech companies in Europe

As the title says Timico has been recognised as one of the 25 fastest growing technology companies in Europe. Wahey.

This is according to Deloitte who base their calculations on five years compound annual growth (5,055% in our case). This nicely complements our 7th place in their UK rankings and the third appearance on the trot in the upper echelons of the Sunday Times Microsoft Techtrack 100.

Deloitte Technology Fast 50 top ten spot for Timico

Today’s hot topic is that Timico came in the top ten of the Deloitte Technology Fast 50.  Hooray 🙂

Deloitte Technology Fast 50, one of the UK’s foremost technology award programmes, is a ranking of the country’s 50 fastest-growing technology companies based on percentage growth over five years. It’s our first year in this list because we have only been going five years.

I’m not sure I have anything else to say on this one really. It’s an exciting ride, if exhausting at times.  What I can say is that we are just in the middle of planning next year’s network upgrades and I can tell you that 2010 is going to be even more exciting.

…and don’t go thinking I’m the sort of person who gets easily excited 🙂

Timico conference wrap up

I’d just like to thank all who came to the Timico conference at Stapleford Park in Leicestershire on Wednesday.  This is an annual event that we hold to get closer to our customers and to brief them on up and coming technologies and products.

We crammed 120 or so guests into the Grand Hall at the hotel and had a mix of both internal and external speakers.  I would particularly like to thank Dennis Turner, Chief Economist at HSBC bank,  Nigel Scott, Director of Customer Engagement at BT and  David Hiscock, Director of Product Management of the Nortel Carrier business for their valuable contribution and insights on the day.

Dennis Turner in particular made a bold prediction that he recession would end and lo and behold I woke up this morning to the BBC news telling me it had done so!  What  foresight!  I’m thinking I might even change banks to HSBC – provided they can agree to my suitably large overdraft requirements  🙂

Footnote: Friday’s news regarding the recession is somewhat more sombre – in fact the economy shrank by 0.4% over the last quarter.  Perhaps I’ll stick with my existing bank!

TechTrack success again for Timico

I’m excited to tell the world that Timico achieved 23rd position in this year’s Sunday Times/Microsoft TechTrack 100 League Table of the fastest growing tech companies in the UK.

Last year we were an amazing 4th and the year before that we were 10th. The table is based on 3 years compound growth so to be in the top 100 for three years running is a fantastic feat let alone three years in the top 23!

We still have a fair bitof work to do to get where we want to be which is to be the number one partner for businesses looking for communications services in the UK but I’d say that the message from the Sunday Times must be that we are very much heading in the right direction.

Arm of steel – customer support training

Rock solid networks are an expectation of our customers. It takes a strong steady arm to run such an operation and it will comfort readers to know that on Friday afternoons the technical and customer services departments get together for training.

The photos are of me in training with Michelle, our Director of Customer Services. Note the motto on the wall in the background on one of them.

Job vacancies at Timico

We are currently looking for ISP first line tech support engineers and ADSL/IP provisioning staff to join our expanding teams in Newark.

Timico is bucking the recessionary trend with a growing managed networks business. If 21CN, IP, VoIP, MPLS, co-location, Virtual Machines sound exciting then take a look at these jobs. Please contact Timico if you are interested. Experience would be great. Technogeeks with a professional attitude and a friendly nature are ideal.

This is clearly a job ad. I’m not really interested in flowering up the jobs, “great career potential” etc but I will say that our first tech support engineer now runs several tech support teams and has team leaders reporting into him.

This is a foot on the first rung that could progress you into Network Operations, Tech Solutions/Network Design, Technical Sales or any other of the many disciplines in the fast moving communications world. If you are good the sky’s the limit.

In 2008 Timico was 4th in the Sunday Times/Microsoft Techtrack 100 table of the fastest growing private companies in the tech sector. We also won the ITSPA award for the Best Unified VoIP Solution.

If you can get in quick you might make it in time for our Summer Barbecue:-). Work hard play hard.

Market bellweather

Timico isn’t big enough (yet) to be a market bellweather.  However there is a feelgood factor about the place which I hope is replicated elsewhere in UKPLC – I fear this is not the case everywhere.

This morning we had our usual monthly board meeting followed by the Annual General Meeting, which as you might guess is annual and not monthly 🙂 .  This was attended by a good number of our investors.

Timico is lucky to have very friendly investors and I am pleased to say the feedback was hugely encouraging. Our shareholders are all friends and family but that doesn’t mean they aren’t financially sophisticated individuals. Pretty much all of them are successful businessmen and women. It’s great to be given a pat on the back and told that “you are all doing very well”.

I also learned a new word today.  Apparently I’m a technosnob.  I’m not quite sure what a technosnob is but I think I’m ok with it. If it means that we are only satified with being the best technically then I am definately ok with it. If it means we win lots of corporate managed networks business, which we are doing, then technosnob is the way to go.

Green shoots of recovery

We have had a real winter this year.  The weather has been authentic and the world is in an economic crisis.  This week I spotted some green shoots.  Picture below – see it as it happens on www.trefor.net.

The Long And The Short Of IT – Or IT Isn't All About Size

In some respects Timico is punching above its weight but our philosophy is to reach for the stars, which might be why we were 4th in the Sunday Times Techtrack last year.

The long and the short of it a company is only as good as its people. Michelle Sharp is Director of Customer Services at Timico. Gareth Bryan is a Technical Solutions engineer and is often out and about on customer sites. Both are pictured below.  You need to scroll down below the photo to appreciate that all is not what it seems.

Using the ruler (30 cms or 1 foot) in the photo as a reference there is a prize for guessing the size difference between the two.  Bonus points for getting their actual heights right. (Timico staff need not apply 🙂 )

It’s a Partnership Approach

Businesses cannot succeed with an “us and them” attitude. We live in such a complex environment that in order to be successful you have to have friends who are pulling your way.

At Timico we work with through both a direct sales orgainsations and through business partners. At the end of the year we have a bit of a celebration. This year our best selling partners were treated to a conference and lunch at Timico Towers.

The conference was informative and entertaining and the lunch was top notch. The photo below shows some of the individuals involved.

Technology Talk for Oakham School

I was asked to do a short talk on technology for the pupils of Oakham School. It presented some challenges – how to cram the subject into ten minutes or so. I decided that the best and most efficient way to do it was to make use of web technology to deliver the talk.

This short video is the result. I am sorry if you have heard some of it before. Otherwise enjoy.
