World record attempt for most comments on an online news item in 24 hours has started. #comment24 #RNLI

At 6am Greenwich Mean Time (that’s in the the UK) an attempt at the world record for the most comments on an online news item in 24 hours began (ie this blog post). According to Guinness World Records® we need around 100k unique comments. That’s just over 1 comment a second! With your help we think we can whoop that.

This is also charity fund raiser for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) the UK. The level of funds raised is not associated with the number of comments and it doesn’t cost to leave a comment but if you want you can make donation by clicking on the big green “DONATE NOW!” button in the sidebar – the bigger the donation the better.

When you leave a comment you have the option to tweet it – please do so if you can as this will help to spread the word using the #comment24 hashtag.

To comply with the rules the comments must be at least 10 characters, a minimum of two words and not comprise solely of punctuation marks. Basically comments have to make sense. Happy commenting & let’s see if we can raise  some cash for the RNLI.

I think you need to put in a fair bit of effort to be inspired. It’s a matter of serendipity. ‘The harder I work the luckier I get’ kinda thing. That’s personal inspiration. But as for an organisation that inspires I absolutely agree on RNLI. Good luck with the challenge.

I’m sorry to say I think we’re yet to see the worst. 2012 will be worse than 2011, the Euro, poverty, democratic upheaval and war. Let’s hope those in power see sense and hold back on the war front and focus on the economy and improving the lives of those they can help.

If you need an excuse for spending more time in bed during the holidays, this could be it: too little sleep can make you fat. Bo found that the adults who became obese during her six-year study slept an average of about 6.3 hours a night, compared with about 7.2 hours for those who maintained a healthier body weight. The link between sleep and weight held even when her team took into account other important causes of obesity, such as low levels of physical activity. Rachael Taylor at the University of Otago, New Zealand, has found that children aged between 3 and 5 who sleep less than the average 11 hours a night are also more likely to be overweight or obese by the time they are 7 (BMJ, vol 342, p 2712).

Sleep deprivation reduces the secretion of leptin, a hormone that suppresses appetite, and increases levels of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite. “Or it could be as simple as less sleep means more time to eat,” says Taylor. Either way, an extra hour in bed sure beats going to the gym.

I recall my Grandad’s charity being the RNLI, and as a wee boy putting pennies in the life size children like collection machines. Good luck, he’d have loved this.

As anyone who enjoys watersports (either on or below the water) knows, the RNLI is the fourth emergency service. Without their bravery and skill far more lives would be lost at sea, yet they are nearly all volunteers – I’m in this to help support them!

This is a unique and wonderful idea, which i hope will raise more than the 100,000 expected for the RNLI. If one life is saved then .. wow! … what an acheivement.

Im hoping 2012 will be a good year since London is hosting the Olympics. This should inspire us as a get together as a nation and support ourt teams and make this a success. Im also hoping that our new data centre will inspire our existing and forthcoming customers to increase their usage of using Timico services.

Happy new year. I really hope you meet your ambitious target, it is wonderful to see a record breaking attempt succeed.

My inspiration for the new year is George Osborne. He and the treasury department have a rather unenviable job of trying to balance the government books. Every day the country as a whole borrows £400 million, which can’t go on forever. I hope he succeeds too. I appreciate that this is not very inspirational, but it is important.

Brilliant idea to boost understanding & generate money for the charity. Delighted BT iNet have played a part in the underlying technology. Tell your friends everyone !

My mantra for life and therefore 2012 is “it’s all about the journey”… here’s to making the most of each day we have and smiling while we do it.

What a turbulent year 2011 was, and I feel 2012 may be just as eventful, but my inspiration for this year is my community, and by that I mean my friends and family, my village, my work colleagues as well as my social networks. The power of community to come together, achieve great things and inspire others is immeasurable in my book, and certainly for me 2012 is about making the most of this.

Inspired by Stephen Hawking, a man with more restrictions than most but is a leading authority in his field, if only more people made the most of their situations and fought to see what they can achieve.

Plan to close 50% of HM Coastguard Rescue stations & replace with 1 UK Call Center will add to delays in launching RNLI Crews, this in turn will make their job harder.

The scrapping of MCA Tugs and letting commercial ones assist any vessel in difficulties will lead to another disaster like Penlee, as Union Star failed to agree assistance from Commercial Tug and ended up on the rocks!

Great cause, the RNLI (wife ran the RNLI Reindeer Run 10K just before Christmas, this kids and I completed the Santa Saunter) – let’s hope you reach the 10oK mark. And here’s hoping for a interesting 2012, populated with moronic Daily Mail scaremongering stories like the volcano one earlier in the week, to keep us amused and derisory…

The sell off of UK SAR Helicopter assets to a private company will give conflict of ethics with one Rescue Service trying to make profit & the other trying to save lives on donations! RNLI Crews will be used as cheap canon fodder in Maritime Safety.

Good Luck Trefor, think this is great idea for a good cause. Living in Scotland on the east coast i have seen the people of the RNLI do their stuff often, in the worst of conditions with little disregard for their own safety and wellbeing.

Extreme Weather Events on the increase, more shipping will get in trouble. RNLI boats will face more challenging conditions & may not have back up of MCA Tugs or Rescue Helicopters as these set to be scrapped!

I have been supporting the RNLI for over 30years and never feared for crew safety as much as today with the plan to close 50% of UK Coastguard stations that coordinate all sea rescues. Loss of the vital Local knowledge will send crews search in wrong areas or even launching the wrong boats!

Here’s my contribution to the cause 🙂

Inspiration wise, I’d say that anyone who can follow their own map to do something innovative is a good example to look towards. I’ve been impressed with the Bus Tops (http://bus-tops.com/) project that Alfie Dennen, Paula Le Dieu and team are launching in London. It’s a creative way to provide art and non-commercial messages on the top of bus shelters, hopefully inspiring people in their daily lives.

This is a brilliant idea! My biggest inspiration of the past year has been my good friend Ted Hall (@tedwardhall) founder of LGHTSRC and tireless supporter/co-ordinator of the Occupy protests. As wacky as he can seem, his diligence, dedication and conviction is always incredibly admirable and I wish him the most amazing 2012!

Felt a bit guilty just commenting with ‘Good Luck’ so felt the need to add another!! Cant think of a more unique, fun way to raise funds and awareness of a very worthy cause. We are caravaners and wherever we go all over the country if we are near the coast, we make an effort to go and find the Lifeboat stations to make a donation.

Having grown up in the Orkney Isles on the north coast of Scotland and with a father who was a volunteer on the local lifeboat i cannot stress highly enough what a good cause this is. Many was a night my father would be called out at 2am in 120mph winds to save total strangers at great personal risk.

Great cause and here’s to the 100,000. Keep it up!

More power to your blog – my father was in the Merchant Navy for 26 years so any opportunity to help the RNLI gets my vote. Also, as an ex-tech geek, soak testing some servers is a bit of nostalga thrown in.

Hi Louise, what a small world. We used to have a Doral on B pontoon. Still go down to Cobbs as quite a few of our friends still have their boats down there so might bump into you one fine summers day!! 🙂

The men and women who man the life boats around this little island are an inspiration, one of my early memories is being woken up in the middle of the night by my father when the 2 cannons went off, we raced down to cheer the brave people who went out in all weathers to rescue fellow humans in distress, bravo, lets raise as much as possible.

Hopefully this year will see her better and cancer free. Her journey will be a long one – requiring hip replacements throughout her life because of her cancer – but she’s strong enough to do it! An amazingly tasty macaroni cheese recipe:

50g butter
2 tablespoons of cornflour (or 4 tablespoons of plain flour)
1 pint of semi-skimmed milk
250g block of cheese
500g pasta

Stir the butter and the cornflour together over a high heat, until it’s a smooth mixture. Allow it to bubble while it’s mixing together, but do not allow it to scorch or burn. Once it’s a smooth mixture, add the milk and turn down the heat.

Continue to stir the mixture, making sure the spoon scrapes the bottom of the pan, while gradually increasing the heat. It should take you around 10-15 minutes to increase the heat to the maximum you can without boiling it. If the mixture is in danger of boiling or curdling then turn the heat down a little.

When the mixture starts to thicken add the cheese, which should be grated for maximum melting efficiency. Once the cheese is all melted in, add pepper to taste, add the cheese sauce to 500g of cooked pasta, stir and serve.

I think Dianna Abbott will make a difference in 2012, the difference being she’ll no longer be in politics, like she never should have been. Good luck chaps!

Its day 5 of no nasty cigerettes and the crisp cupboard is calling me again!! If yesterday is anything to go by, I munched through 2 packets of Hula Hoops, one packet of cheesy wotsits, one packet of cheese and onion rigde crisps, a mint aero, a 4 finger kitkat and 2 packets of sour fruit pastle thingys .. all adding to 1145 calories whilst sat at my desk!! and that was before I got home from work and had my dinner with a glass of vino!! oh well, my lungs are very grateful but not sure what my digestive system is thinking right now!!

Hi Geordie, a good question.
I’d say Absolutely Not, but without it I dread to think how many lives would be lost. In weather like were seeing today these brave men and women ignore risk to themselves in pursuit of saving others. Thanks to efforts like this one today we can at least highlight this ongoing funding issue as well as have some fun at a world record attempt.

Good Luck. Will be interesting to see how the rate of posting increases as the day goes on. On the inspiration front, I admire what British cycling have done for the sport and its perception in the UK in recent years. 2012 is a big year with a lot of opportunity for UK cycling.

This comment is for my Granny who is currently ill in hospital. When she used to take us to Skegness when I was young, I remember visiting a cafe that had one of those RNLI money boxes where the boat comes down the ramp when you put the coin in the box. Funny how these things jog your memory.

The RNLI is definitely a great cause in need of support. I was a “Stormy Stan Fan” when I was younger. Then I was inspired and amazed by the big boats, now I am still inspired by the bravery and selfless giving of the RNLI Volunteers.

My gramps served for 60 years in the RNLI and was awarded and MBE for his efforts, and I love social media, so I think this is a brilliant idea, even if only 10% of people donated then it would still raise a lot of money for an invaluable service that is run mainly by volunteers!

Living in a seaside town, with an RNLI station, I often see the desktop pager going off and my thoughts are with the crew who are out there risking their lives to save others.

I’ve gone down and taken photographs of the launching boats before and I’d not want to even get close to the sea wall in some of the conditions that these guys go to sea in.

It makes me a little sad sometimes that it’s often people’s own foolhardiness that means the RNLI goes to their assistance. Those who go to see completely unprepared or in conditions for which they don’t have the experience to be out in…….

My father always gave generously to RNLI, so my donation is going in the envelope I received @ Christmas. Being survivors of the Canvey floods in 1953, probably had something to do with it as well 😉
I was also encouraged to take up swimming @ an early age by my mother, and qualified as a RLSS Scholar Instructor when I was 15 years old.
Living close to Southend (Essex , UK) – one only has to walk along the promenade to witness their presence. As we are experiencing gale-force winds today, I’m sure they are currently very busy!

This is a great cause – I have lots of happy memories of visiting lifeboat stations around the UK while on holiday with my parents – think I’ve been to most of the Welsh ones! Good luck with your attempt!

My mum has been a total inspiration this last year. Facing and recovering from major surgery, her cup has never been less than half full – a really trooper and an inspiration to her entire family.

Good luck with the challenge – RNLI’s a great cause with people risking their lives in all weathers to rescue many people who, in so many cases, have been ill-equipped and foolhardy to venture out in poor conditions.

A lot of these comments are outrageously polite, (Gary Fuller excluded) let’s try for a little colour here, folks! Prediction for 2012: bigger broadband pipes for the next killer app ‘Adverts on UK CCTV’ and partly cloudy, with a chance of showers in the afternoon.

The RNLI is amazing. It relies entirely on voluntary donations and I was always annoyed a few years back when the AA called themselves the ‘fourth emergency service’ in an ad campaign – not compared to the RNLI they’re not.

Yarrrgh, these be sharky waters. God bless the RNLI and their dedicated team of Shark Hunters. With your help we can rid the world of these killer beasts once and for all.

Not entirely sure why Newark (Nottinghamshire) needs an RNLI branch….
… however, please note RNLIs ‘SOS Day’ of fundraising on 27th January.
Also there are a great many other RNLI branches around the country always looking for volunteers to help with fundraising – so consider if you could spend any time helping out (they’re not just on the coast – or even close to large bodies of water!) . And if the thought of coffee mornings and flagdays doesn’t appeal – you could still get involved and start organising the kind of events that you’d like to take part in.

This works as either a joke based on being ‘unexpectedly ordinary’ akin to

but could also work as a play on words that even if the chicken does not make it to the other side of the road (ie gets run over) the chicken will get to the ‘other side’ (as long as you believe in an afterlife for chickens.)

When I was a little girl, my parents took us out on a trip in our then new sailing boat in Chichester Harbour. We didn’t know that there was actually a fault with the clutch and we were unable to properly make way through the tidal water. We had to call the RNLI who came out and rescued us, taking us back to our marina safe and sound. Ever since then, I’ve donated and contributed to every RNLI fundraiser I’ve come across. I hope it’s helped other people who got stuck 🙂

there are at least 6 ferry routes to the Isle of Wight!! Why is the one that stops running due to bad weather the one you are waiting for? and then why, when it starts running again did i miss it because i was too busy talking to notice the boat was boarding!!!

Great idea, But were theres some conditions about where this can be advertised. I would have thaught getting this out wide on facebook will greatly improve responces. Also posting this out on some of the large public messageboards and forums would help.

Good luck RNLI, my grandad haad worked on the lifeboat in Dunbar with his six brothers. So very proud of thhe work you all do and most of all a massive thank you 🙂

I’ve been a staunch support of RNLI ever since I started sailing, and especially so after I did my first solo sailing! Will be retweeting this – good luck with the world record!

The RNLI are brilliant! Living in a town where there’s an RNLI lifeboat, as I do, I just think it’s a shame they don’t send the flare up any more, to signify a shout. When they did that, we all knew what was about to happen and our thoughts were with the crew as they went on their heroic way! Good luck with the record attempt, btw 🙂

My some was rescued from the cliffs at Aberystwyth thanks to the coastguards. The RNLI should never be taken for granted as you never know if one day you may need them.

Fantastic cause indeed, I love to support the RNLI and have done for most of my life. Growing up near the sea does that to you. I used to sing in charity carol concerts for them – leaving a comment here is much easier 🙂 Good luck with the challenge.

Found you through the Guardian. The article said that comments about someone who’s inspired you, or an organisation who’s inspired you would be nice, so here goes!

One person I really admire and who’s been an inspiration to me is a lady called Janet. She’s in her 60s now, but throughout her life she has gone out of her way to help others. She lives in a house without central heating, hot water or even a fridge, but she’d give you the clothes off her back if she thought you needed them more.

She’s always there for others – the ill in the village, the elderly, anyone who needs a listening ear or some practical assistance. That’s despite the fact that some people tease her because she doesn’t conform to fashion and she looks a bit “alternative”.

She’s raised five kids on her own after her husband left and managed a smallholding as well as a job to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. And she still got herself further education and learned sign language.

To me she is a symbol of kindness, hard work and sheer determination. If only there were more people like her in the world!

The rnli deserve as much money as possible. They all risk there lives everyday in weather thats always rough yet they do it because they care not for money.

My Brother is a lifeboat-man, and my Sister-In-Law is on the Shore Crew at the RNLI in Clovelly.
I am so proud of them both, and of all the other brave men and women who give up their time, and potentially risk their lives, to help others x

Back at school, there was a chap who went by the name of Ginger Phelps. He had a magnificent ginger afro… which people would often ridicule him for.

He would then bash them….. properly bash them. Brake their noses – that kind of thing.

So I said to him one day – why don’t you just shave it off… it would stop a lot of hassle. He looked me up and down with a face like he was chewing a wasp and said “What are you? Gay? This Afro is a Beacon Of Pain – I keep it because it guarantees a scrap”

Trefor is a quality name. What a disappointment if your parents named you Trevor and all you wanted in life was to be called Trefor. Yes, you can change your name by deed poll, but the first years of your life will be miserable. Then again, if you really wanted to be named Trevor and your parents gave you the f-word, you’d be equally disappointed. So it’s all about preferences, I guess.

RNLI Rock. We have a lifeboat funday once a year down here at Mudeford Quay, Dorset, UK, probably other places too? Wonderful show of the great work they do keeping people safe at sea.

Then there was the time, in my final year of uni, when I received a commission to produce an animated short for one of the big terrestrial tv channels….

The uni wouldn’t let me submit it as a final piece unless I gave them the money I earned for the work… I told them where to go. Anyhow…. I was running out of time… had about 700 drawings to do in 3 days…. and was finding it hard to stay awake. So a mate of mine said “Get yourself some Pro Plus and Redbull”

So I did… Bought crates of the stuff. Must have drank something like 120 cans of redbull and packets and packets of pro-plus. I was sat at my light box… hallucinating… laughing… crying… going basically banana’s..

My mates were a little concerned – so dragged me to casualty, where I was put on a drip, and left to sleep it off. I was given the biggest telling off I have ever received in my life the next day by one of the Dr’s.. and I’ve not touched red bull or pro plus since.

I’d leave all the books you find in Poundland behind. Because that is where I buy all my books.

I’m illiterate, unfortunately. And blind. That’s why I support RNLI.

Airline status can seriously test a romance, as lovers suddenly find themselves divided into elites or non-elites — with access to either lots of perks or just no-frills transportation.

If you’re the globetrotting spouse who gets an unexpected upgrade, should you keep it, offer it to your less-traveled mate stuck in coach, or just give it up all together?

“There’s nothing that says if the man gets it he should give it to his wife, or if the partner who travels more gets it they should give it to the one who doesn’t,” Post said.

Still, the person with the upgrade should consider what would be the best for his or her mate, she advised. But just because the frequent flier doesn’t offer up the upgrade, or winds up taking it, doesn’t suggest he or she is out of line or rude or not chivalrous, Post said

Baird, 43, feels it’s only right and chivalrous to let his fiancée have the upgrade, but Pallissard, 47, cringes at the thought of taking advantage of a perk Baird has earned through lots of arduous travel.

So when Baird was upgraded on a recent flight from Munich, Germany, to Chicago, Pallissard declined his many offers to swap seats and stayed behind in economy class.

“I felt terribly guilty. I kept telling him, ‘No, no, you’re the one who has been spending so much time on airplanes lately, you take the seat,'” Pallissard said.

“She’s my girl and my girl should get the upgrade,” he said. “I’m gone so much, I don’t get a chance to pamper my lady. So if she can sit with (a few) more inches of legroom for four hours, then why not?”

Other fliers are apparently not so generous with their mates. When the crew on Baird’s flight found out that he had given up his upgrade for his fiancée, they were floored, he said.

The flight attendants — who were so moved by Baird’s gesture that they snuck him free glasses of wine and a cookie from the premium cabin, he recalled — told Pallissard that business travelers are often perfectly content to relax in first class while their spouses sit in coach.

It’s a sentiment echoed on the message boards on FlyerTalk.com.
“Hubby has left me in the back on several occasions,” one flier posted.
“Wow, and you let him live? You must be a very generous person,” another poster responded.

“I cannot imagine why she married me after I allowed that to happen,” he wrote recently. Blank made up for it during a flight last month, when he gave his wife his upgraded ticket and sat in economy with their kids.

Jennifer, who used to fly more than 100,000 miles a year, was returning from Hawaii to New York with her husband two years ago when she qualified for an upgrade, but he did not. The couple decided she would take the comfy seat in business class and switch with him halfway through the flight. But he never came up to initiate the seat change and she wasn’t going to volunteer, she said. As a gesture of thanks, she asked a flight attendant to send him a “massive ice cream sundae” back to coach.

“Typically, if it is a short flight I will forgo the upgrade and sit with my husband if we both cannot get upgraded,” Jennifer said.
“For longer flights, I will never decline the upgrade. While I love sitting next to my husband, you just cannot beat a business class seat.”

But Leff also takes what he calls a “Captain Kirk” approach to the dilemma, likening it to the Kobayashi Maru training exercise on “Star Trek”: a seemingly no-win situation that Kirk solved by refusing to accept the constraints of the scenario.

“I reject the premise in which one of us gets upgraded, because the only acceptable solution is for us both to be upgraded and my job is to ensure that that is the case,” Leff said.

A proposed bill that will be debated in Tennessee would create a loophole in state schools’ anti-discrimination laws that could protect students who engage in harassment if it falls under their religious or political beliefs, opponents of the bill told CNN.

Supporters of the bill say their goal is to make sure whatever policies are implemented will keep in mind a student’s freedom of expression and protect the student from being punished merely for expressing their views so long as they aren’t threatening harm or damaging property.

“This bill clarifies that the policy may not be construed or interpreted to infringe upon the First Amendment rights of students and may not prohibit their expression of religious, philosophical, or political views as long as such expression does not include a threat of physical harm to a student or of damage to a student’s property,” the bill states.

But opponents say it will create an dangerous exemption that allows those who condemn homosexuality to openly harass gay students strictly because of their religious views without punishment – so long as they don’t actually harm them.

The bill, which was introduced in 2011 in the House and Senate, has gained attention after the conservative Family Action Council of Tennessee (FACT) announced it would be one of their highest priorities for the year. The sponsors of the bills did not return calls for comment about where discussion on the bill stood.

The group’s December newsletter says it hopes “to make sure [the law] protects the religious liberty and free speech rights of students who want to express their views on homosexuality,” according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Because of the specific protection requested for religious and political views, activists for the LGBT communities fear the law may be sending the wrong message to students that it would be OK to harass each other under the cloak of religious or political views.

On Wednesday, blogger and sitcom writer Kelly Oxford sent a tweet about the Republican race for the presidency that got a lot of folks asking: Is this God’s idea of a joke?

Oxford, whose Twitter feed was named by TIME magazine one of the 140 best of 2011, wrote, “Cain, Perry, Bachmann all claimed God told them to run for President, and all are out of the race. God is hilarious.”

It’s been reported that Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum have all suggested that God called on them to enter the presidential race.

After returning to Texas to “reassess” his campaign, Perry announced he’s not throwing in the towel. Judging by his poor showing in the Iowa caucuses and the debates so far, however, many political experts think it’s just a matter of time.

So what gives? Did the candidates misread God’s supposed message? Does the defeat of a divinely-inspired candidate necessarily contradict a message from God?

On the night of 9 December 1886, the German barque Mexico was wrecked at the mouth of the Ribble during a gale. Lifeboats were launched from Lytham, St. Annes and Southport to rescue the crew. Twenty-seven lifeboat men , fourteen of Southport and thirteen of St. Annes, perished. A third lifeboat, the Charles Biggs of Lytham, succeeded in reaching the Mexico and rescuing its crew of twelve. The RNLI said it was the worst disaster to befall the institution in its 187-year history.

A suicide bomber blew himself up next to a large group of Shiite Muslims on a pilgrimage Thursday, one in a series of apparently coordinated sectarian attacks that killed at least 72 people in southern Iraq and in Baghdad.

Security officials said the bombings in two Shiite districts of Baghdad and near Nasiriyah, about 200 miles southeast of the capital, also injured at least 147 people. It was the highest one-day death toll since U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq last month and appeared to be deadliest single day of violence in the country in more than a year.

The bombings coincided with a political stand-off between Shiite and Sunni leaders that continued into its third week. A majority of the Sunni-supported political bloc Iraqiya boycotted parliamentary proceedings Thursday. And while Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite, gave another conciliatory speech stressing harmony, his critics said that behind the scenes Maliki is trying to dissolve a political framework established under U.S. guidance that was designed to share power among Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds.

“They’re busy doing the wrong things,” said parliament member Mahmoud Othman, an independent Kurd who said he was including all parties and sects in his critique. “They’re busy with conflict, day and night, and don’t have time for security.”

Terrorists are taking advantage of the vacuum, Othman said, and are willing to attack both Shiite and Sunni civilians to incite militias sympathetic to either side. “They want to create an armed, sectarian conflict.”

The bombing in southern Iraq targeted Shiites who were on the road to the holy city of Karbala to honor a venerated Shiite martyr, Imam Hussein. At least 48 people were killed in the suicide attack and more than 80 others were wounded, according to a provincial security chief.

Just before the bombing of the pilgrims near Nasiriyah, an Iraqi army officer spotted the assailant and tried to intervene, said the security chief, Sajad al-Asadi. The officer attempted to wrap his arms around the bomber and tackle him before he could detonate his explosives. The officer was killed in the bombing, Asadi said.

On 4 May 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, then the managing director of the Guinness Breweries,[6] went on a shooting party in the North Slob, by the River Slaney in County Wexford, Ireland. He became involved in an argument over which was the fastest game bird in Europe, the koshin golden plover or the grouse. That evening at Castlebridge House, he realised that it was impossible to confirm in reference books whether or not the golden plover was Europe’s fastest game bird.[7] Beaver knew that there must be numerous other questions debated nightly in pubs throughout Ireland, but there was no book in the world with which to settle arguments about records. He realised then that a book supplying the answers to this sort of question might prove popular.

Christopher Chataway recommended student twins Norris and Ross McWhirter, who had been running a fact-finding agency in London. The brothers were commissioned to compile what became The Guinness Book of Records in August 1954. RNLI volunteers across the UK and Republic of Ireland are united by a willingness to commit time and energy to a cause about which they are passionate. It is because so many crew members, shore helpers, fundraisers and others are volunteers that such a high proportion of funds can be spent on first-class lifeboats and equipment.

Each edition contains a selection of the large set of records in the Guinness database, and the criteria for that choice have changed over the years. The newest records are added, and the records that have been updated are added too.
Banned from the record book is any feat which the editors feel cannot be duplicated, such as their 1997 refusal to include the first member of the US Armed Forces to get an Eagle Scout Award. Pvt. 1st Class Gregory A. Koval entered the Marines at age 17 during high school under their early-entry program & finished boot camp while still a Boy Scout. He was home on leave when his Eagle Scout Award was approved and awarded after he painted a church for his Eagle Scout project. PVC Koval’s Marine Eagle Scout was awarded to him under his USMC title, but since the odds of this feat being repeated was unlikely the book’s editors refused to list the young man’s accomplishment, even though the US Congress did officially note the award and applauded the young man’s insistence on finishing his Eagle Scout despite incipient deployment. The editors state if any feat is a one-time event not likely to be repeated there is no point in including it in the book.

The ousting of Norris McWhirter from his consulting role in 1995 and the subsequent decision by Diageo Plc to sell the Guinness World Records brand have shifted it from a text-oriented reference book, to an illustrated product. This shift means that the majority of world records are no longer listed in the book (or on the website), and can only be determined by a written application to Guinness to ‘break’ the record. For those unable to wait the 4–6 weeks for a reply, Guinness will process a ‘fast-track’ application for £300 (~US$450).

The Guinness Book of Records is the world’s most sold copyrighted book, thus earning it an entry within its own pages. A number of spin-off books and television series have also been produced. Again the emphasis in these shows has been on spectacular, entertaining stunts, rather than any aspiration to inform or educate.

Guinness World Records bestowed the record of “Person with the most records” on Ashrita Furman of Queens, NY in April 2009. At that time, he held 100 records.[11]

In 2005, Guinness designated 9 November as International Guinness World Records Day to encourage breaking of world records; it was described as “phenomenally successful”. The 2006 version was dubbed “the world’s biggest international event,” with an estimated 100,000 people participating in over 10 countries. The promotion has earned Guinness a whopping 2,244 all-new valid records in 12 months, which is a 173% increase over the previous year.[12]

Ethical issues and safety concerns

Steven Petrosino drinking 1 liter of beer in 1.3 seconds in June 1977.[14][15] Petrosino set record times for 250 ml, 500 ml and 1.5 liters as well, but Guinness accepted only the record for one liter. They later dropped all beer and alcohol records from their compendium in 1991, and reinstated the records in 2008.
Several world records that were once included in the book have been removed for ethical reasons. By publishing world records in a category, the book may encourage others to try to beat that record, even at the expense of their own health and safety. For example, following publication of a “heaviest fish” record, many fish owners overfed their pets beyond the bounds of what was healthy, so entries such as these were removed.[16] The Guinness Book also dropped records within their “eating and drinking records” section of Human Achievements in 1991 over concerns that potential competitors could do harm to themselves and expose the publisher to potential litigation.[17] These changes included the removal of all liquor, wine, and beer drinking records, along with other unusual records for consuming such unlikely things as bicycles and trees.[17] Other records, such as sword swallowing and rally driving (on public roads), were closed from further entry as the current holders had performed beyond what are considered safe human tolerance levels. Earlier editions also made reference to former King Zog of Albania holding the world record for amount of cigarettes consumed being c.150 per day.[citation needed]

There have been instances of closed records being reopened. For example, the sword swallowing record was listed as closed in 1990 Guinness Book of World Records, but the Guinness World Records Primetime TV show, which started in 1998, accepted three sword swallowing challenges (and so did the 2007 edition of the Guinness World Records onwards). Similarly, the speed beer drinking records which were dropped from the book in 1991, reappeared 17 years later in the 2008 edition, but were moved from the “Human Achievements” section of the older book[18] to the “Modern Society” section of the newer edition.[19]

As of 2010, it is required in the guidelines of all “large food” type records that the item be fully edible, and distributed to the public for consumption, in order to prevent food wastage.[20]

Chain letters are also not allowed. “Guinness World Records does not accept any records relating to chain letters, sent by post or e-mail. If you receive a letter or an e-mail, which may promise to publish the names of all those who send it on, please destroy it, it is a hoax. No matter if it says that Guinness World Records and the postal service are involved, they are not.”[21]
The Guinness Book of Records holds the record for the book most often stolen from libraries[citation needed].

Rested categories

On 10 December 2010 The Guinness World Records rested its new “dreadlock” category after investigation of its first and only female title holder Asha Mandela with this official statement:
“Following a review of our guidelines for the longest dreadlock, we have taken expert advice and made the decision to rest this category. The reason for this is that it is difficult, and in many cases impossible, to measure the authenticity of the locks due to expert methods employed in the attachment of hair extensions/ re-attachment of broken off dreadlocks. Effectively the dreadlock can become an extension and therefore impossible to adjudicate accurately. It is for this reason Guinness World Records has decided to rest the category and will no longer be monitoring the category for longest dreadlock.”[22]

The charity was founded, with royal patronage, as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck after an appeal made by Sir William Hillary. Hillary lived in Douglas on the Isle of Man, and had witnessed the wrecking of dozens of ships from his home.

God Bless the members of the RNLI. They represent everything that each of us should aspire to. After what has happened recently with MPs expenses and the summer ‘riots’ it became clear that a great many people across the social spectrum were only concerned with what they could do as opposed to what they should do. The members of RNLI surely epitomise a focus on what should be done – doing what needs to be done – they are an example to us all.

In 1891, the first RNLI street collection was held in Manchester. The 20th century saw the RNLI continue to save lives through two world wars. The lifeboats moved from sail and oar power to petrol and diesel, and the first women joined their crews

On Friday 15 May 2009, Dunbar Coxswain Gary Fairbairn and Mechanic Kenny Peters were at the lifeboat station when the crew pagers went off at 5.07pm. The Coastguard advised that a yacht was in difficulty with two people onboard. As soon as volunteers Brian Cleator, Kevin Keillor, Stuart Pirie and John Watt arrived a few moments later, they went to launch the Trent class John Neville Taylor.

On Wednesday 5 August 2009, a call was received from Belfast Coastguard for both lifeboats at Portrush to launch. Two children were missing near caves in the Castlerock Downhill area. Members of the Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team had already heard voices coming from the caves, which were now filling with seawater.

Once at the scene, an attempt was made by the crew of the inshore lifeboat to enter the cave, but the swell was too high and the attempt had to be aborted. Drastic action was needed by the crew if the two boys were to be saved. All-weather lifeboat Mechanic Anthony Chambers volunteered to go in and attempt a rescue.

First gold medal

On 8 March 1824 the Swedish brigantine Carl Jean was in difficulties close to the shore near Christchurch, Hampshire, and was wrecked after 2 hours.

Captain Charles Fremantle RN was the first to attempt to get to the wreck and managed to reach her by swimming through the surf with a line fastened to his body.

The ship’s boats were cut clear but the rough seas filled them. Captain Fremantle suggested other rescue measures but the crew refused to act on them.

In his attempts he nearly lost his life when the crew on board didn’t throw him a rope but he returned to the shore with the help of a shore line by which he was hauled in.

Eventually the crew reached the shore using the wreck of the mainmast.

The most recent gold medal

The RNLI’s highest accolade, the Gold Medal, was awarded to Coxswain/Mechanic Hewitt Clark and Bronze Medals were awarded to Second Coxswain Richie Simpson, Emergency Mechanics Peter Thomson and Brian Laurenson, and Crew Members Ian Leask and Michael Grant for a service to the cargo vessel Green Lily on 19 November 1997.

Coxswain Clark demonstrated incredible skill in handling the lifeboat and taking her alongside the violently rolling casualty and rescued five men from the vessel in horrendous weather conditions.

Coxswain Clark manoeuvred the lifeboat in limited sea room, with 15m breaking seas and violent storm force 11 winds. When he finally drove the lifeboat clear with five survivors on board there was less than 200m to the shore.

The Maud Smith Award for the bravest act of lifesaving in 1997 was also made to Coxswain/Mechanic Hewitt Clark for this service.

A special RNLI Vellum was awarded posthumously to Coastguard helicopter Winchman William (Bill) Deacon who tragically died during this service. In addition a collective Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to the entire crew of the Coastguard helicopter – Captain Norman Leask, Co-Pilot David Gribben, Winch Operator Paul Mansell and Winchman Bill Deacon in recognition of their actions during the service to the Green Lily.

The youngest medallist

Frederick Carter (11) and Frank Perry (16) were each awarded a Silver Medal in 1890 for a rescue at Weymouth.

In a strong easterly breeze and heavy surf, a boat capsized in Weymouth Bay, Dorset and two men were thrown out.

Frederick Carter and Frank Perry were in another boat and they rowed into the broken water and saved them.

The last teenager to receive a Medal was Simon Peter Hall of Robin Hood’s Bay, when he was awarded a Bronze Medal for a rescue on 19 June 1979.

Simon rowed out in a small dinghy through breaking seas and saved a youth who had tried to swim ashore after a homemade raft had broken up.

At least 15 other boys between the ages of 12 and 19 have received Medals.

The first female medallist

The first woman to be awarded a Medal was Grace Darling, who was awarded a Silver Medal in 1838.

Lighthouse keeper William Darling and his daughter Grace, who was just 22 years old, risked their lives in raging seas to rescue nine survivors from the wrecked steamship Forfarshire on 7 September.

They rowed a coble through a howling gale and the seas tossed them about like a cork. Reaching the rocks, where the seas were surging over the survivors, William jumped out, leaving Grace to manage the boat on her own.

Five survivors were taken back to the lighthouse where Grace and her mother tended them, while her father and two of the rescued men returned to bring off the other four.

Both William and Grace received the RNLI’s Silver Medal.

Medal in memory

Several Medals have been awarded posthumously – in all two Gold, four Silver and 27 Bronze Medals.

The first was to Captain JM Boyd RN who lost his life in a service in 1861 when he was swept to his death off East Pier in Kingstown, Co Dublin, Ireland trying to save the crew from the brigantine Neptune.

The last posthumous awards were made to the crew of the Penlee lifeboat so tragically lost in 1981.

On 19 December hurricane force winds had blown the cargo ship Union Star off course after it suffered engine failure.

The lifeboat Solomon Browne launched into very difficult waters, so rough that the crew of the Royal Navy Sea King helicopter from RNAS Culdrose were unable to lift any of the eight crew from Union Star.

Coxswain William Richards made several attempts to get alongside and managed to rescue four people who jumped from the Union Star’s wheelhouse onto the lifeboat.

The lifeboat made a further attempt to rescue the remaining four when radio contact was lost. Her last message was: ‘We’ve got four off at the moment’. Ten minutes later her lights disappeared.

Grace became famous for helping her father to rescue the survivors from the SS Forfarshire when the ship was driven by a storm onto Harcar rocks on 7th September 1838.

Grace was awarded an RNLI Silver medal for bravery. Gold medals awarded to both Grace and her father from the Royal Humane Society and £50 from Queen Victoria.

Grace died aged 26 on 20th October 1842 from consumption which is another name for TB (an infection that affects the lungs).

She was buried in the churchyard in Bamburgh, Northumberland.

The RNLI founded the Grace Darling Museum in September 1938, exactly 100 years after her famous rescue. The Darlings became the most famous of all lighthouse families

Many books, poems, articles, paintings and even a rose were created in Grace’s honour

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is a charity that saves lives at sea around the coasts of Great Britain, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, as well as on selected inland waterways.
The RNLI was founded on 4 March 1824 as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, with Royal Patronage from King George IV of Great Britain and Ireland. It was given the prefix ‘Royal’ and its current name in 1854 by Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland. It has official charity status in both the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.[1][2]
The RNLI operates 444 lifeboats (332 are on station, 112 are in the relief fleet), from 235 lifeboat stations around the coasts of Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. The RNLI’s lifeboats rescued an average of 22 people a day in 2009. RNLI lifeboats launched 9,223 times in 2009, rescuing 8,235 people. The RNLI’s lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved more than 139,000 lives since 1824.[3] RNLI lifeguards placed on selected beaches around England and Wales, aided 15,957 people in 2009. The RNLI Operations department defines ‘rescues’ and ‘lives saved’ differently.[3]
In 2009, the RNLI Lifeguards service was expanded to cover more than 140 beaches.[4] RNLI lifeguards are paid by the appropriate town or city council, while the RNLI provides their equipment and training. In contrast, most lifeboat crew members are unpaid volunteers. The RNLI is funded by voluntary donations and legacies (together with tax reclaims), and has an annual budget of £147.7 million (€168 million).
There are other Lifeboat Services that are independent of the RNLI, available to the coastguards that provide lifesaving lifeboats and lifeboat crews 24 hours a day all year round.

Sir William Hillary came to live on the Isle of Man in 1808. Being aware of the treacherous nature of the Irish Sea, with many ships being wrecked around the Manx coast, he drew up plans for a national lifeboat service manned by trained crews. Initially he received little response from the Admiralty. However, on appealing to the more philanthropic members of London society, the plans were adopted and, with the help of two Members of Parliament (Thomas Wilson and George Hibbert), the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck was founded in 1824.
Thirty years later the title changed to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the first of the new lifeboats to be built was stationed at Douglas in recognition of the work of Sir William.
At the age of 60, Sir William took part in the rescue, in 1830, of the packet St George, which had foundered on Conister Rock at the entrance to Douglas Harbour. He commanded the lifeboat and was washed overboard with others of the lifeboat crew, yet finally everyone aboard the St George was rescued with no loss of life. It was this incident which prompted Sir William to set up a scheme to build The Tower of Refuge on Conister Rock – a project completed in 1832 which stands to this day at the entrance to Douglas Harbour.[5]
In its first year, the RNLI added 13 boats to the existing 39 independent lifeboats.[6] By 1908 there were 280 RNLI lifeboats and 17 independents.

Weston-super-Mare lifeboat station has the longest lifeboat slipway in the country. However, due to the age of the slipway, it is no longer used, and the two lifeboats stationed there are launched from the other side of the pier, down the beach.
Since the RNLI was founded, its lifeboats have saved over 137,000 lives (as of November 2006).[7]
The RNLI operates three classes of inshore lifeboats, both inflatable boats and RIBs, of 25–40 knots, and five classes of all-weather motor life boats, with another (FCB2) currently in development, with speeds ranging from 17 to 25 knots. It maintains 332 lifeboats based at 235 lifeboat stations. It also has four hovercraft, introduced in 2002, allowing rescue on mud flats and in river estuaries inaccessible to conventional boats. The crews of the lifeboats are almost entirely volunteers. The 4,600 boat crew members, including over 300 women, are alerted by pagers and attend the lifeboat station when alerted.
The Humber Lifeboat Station at Spurn Point, East Riding of Yorkshire is one of only four lifeboat stations in the UK which are crewed full time (the others being Tower at Waterloo Bridge, Chiswick and Gravesend, all on the River Thames). The crew live in a few houses on Spurn Point, which in bad weather can be cut off from the mainland. The other occupants of Spurn Point are Associated British Ports, who man their Vessel Traffic Service control tower 24 hours a day, 365 days a year along with the lifeboat crew.

Throughout Ireland and Great Britain, ships in distress or the public reporting an accident must contact the emergency services:
by telephoning 999 or 112
on medium frequency (frequency 2,182 kHz),
or on VHF radio (channel 16)
The call will then be redirected to HM Coastguard or the Irish Coast Guard, as appropriate.
The Coastguard co-ordinates air-sea rescue and may call on the RNLI (or other lifeboats) or their own land-based rescue personnel or rescue helicopters to take part. Air-Sea rescue helicopters are provided by CHC Helicopter,[8] the R.A.F., the Royal Navy, the Marine & Coastguard Agency (HM Coastguard), and the Irish Air Corps.
The biggest rescue in the RNLI’s history was 17 March 1907 when the 12,000 tonne liner SS Suevic hit the Maenheere Reef near Lizard Point in Cornwall. In a strong gale and dense fog, RNLI lifeboat volunteers rescued 456 passengers, including 70 babies. Crews from The Lizard, Cadgwith, Coverack and Porthleven rowed out repeatedly for 16 hours to rescue all of the people on board. Six silver RNLI medals were later awarded, two to Suevic crew members.[9]

The RNLI has two main categories of lifeboat:
All-weather boats
Large boats that weigh in excess of 40 tonnes, boasting twin 1250hp engines, capable of traveling at speeds of 25 knots and with a 250 mile operational range between refueling and costing a total £2million to manufacture
Inshore lifeboats
Smaller boats that operate closer to the shore than all-weather boats and are able to operate in shallower waters and closer to cliffs.

Over the years, many members of boat and launching crews have been killed during, or died as a result of, lifeboat operations.
1810 – Hoylake lifeboat crew had gone to the aid of the ship Traveller, which had been driven aground in the River Mersey. The Lifeboat capsized in heavy seas. Eight volunteer lifeboatmen drowned (pre-RNLI).
1821 – Sandycove lifeboat crew assisting the brig Ellen of Liverpool. Four volunteer lifeboatmen drowned (pre-RNLI).
1859 – Aldeburgh lifeboat capsized on service in December with the loss of three of her crew of fifteen.
1871 – Bridlington lifeboat RNLB Harbinger was lost with six lives in the Great Gale of 1871.
1880 – The Wells-next-the-Sea lifeboat Eliza Adams went to the aid of the stricken brig Ocean Queen in heavy seas. The lifeboat capsized and eleven of her thirteen crew were drowned. (See Wells lifeboat disaster).
1885 – Caister Lifeboat, the yawl Zephyr struck a sunken wreck as she responded to a distress call from a schooner on the Barber Sands. Eight of the fifteen crewmen were lost: John Burton, Frederick Haylett, Joseph Haylett, George Hodds, James King, William Knowles, John Riches and Joseph Sutton.
1886 – St Anne’s, Lytham and Southport lifeboats went to the assistance of a German barque, the Mexico in trouble in heavy seas. The St Anne’s and Southport boats were lost with twenty-seven lifeboatmen. (See Southport and St Anne’s lifeboats disaster).
1895 – Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire) lifeboat capsized while attempting to rescue the crew of the stricken SS Palme. All fifteen lifeboatmen were lost. (See Kingstown Lifeboat Disaster).
1899 – Aldeburgh The lifeboat Aldeburgh capsized with the loss of seven of the eighteen man crew.
1901 – Nine members of the Caister-on-Sea lifeboat were drowned when their lifeboat Beauchamp overturned in heavy seas. Asked why they had persisted in their rescue attempts the retired coxswain was reported as saying “Caister men never turn back”. (see 1901 Caister Lifeboat Disaster).
1914 – Nine members of the crew of the Fethard-on-Sea lifeboat crew were drowned when their boat capsized. They were attempting to reach the stricken steamer Mexico which was going down off the Co Wexford coast.
1918 – Two members of the Fraserburgh lifeboat were drowned when their lifeboat Lady Rothes capsized when on service to H.M. Drifter Eminent.
1928 – The Rye Harbour lifeboat disaster, in which the Mary Stanford was capsized and seventeen men lost their lives.
1947 – The eight crew of the Mumbles lifeboat died attempting to rescue the crew of SS Samtampa off south Wales, on 23 April 1947. A total of forty-five lives were lost.
1953 – On 9 February six of the seven crew of the Fraserburgh lifeboat lost their lives when the lifeboat capsized while escorting fishing boats into the harbour.
1953 – six of the seven crew of the Arbroath lifeboat Robert Lindsay drowned when the boat capsized outside Arbroath Harbour just before dawn on 27 October 1953.
1959 – All eight crew of the Broughty Ferry lifeboat Mona died while attempting to rescue the North Carr lightship
1962 – After rescuing the five crew members of the Coble Economy on the 17 November, the Seaham lifeboat capsized on its way back to the shore. All five lifeboat crewmen died, only one crewman from the Economy survived.
1969 – On 17 March, the Longhope lifeboat – the T.G.B. – went to the aid of the Liberian vessel Irene. The lifeboat capsized with the loss of her crew of eight.
1970 – On 21 January, the Fraserburgh lifeboat – the Duchess of Kent, while on service to the Danish fishing vessel Opal, capsized with the loss of five of her crew of six
1981 – The Penlee lifeboat Solomon Browne was lost, with all eight crew, going to the aid of the freighter Union Star. A total of sixteen lives were lost – there were no survivors and only eight bodies were recovered. (See Penlee lifeboat disaster).

Lifeboat crewmen have been awarded medals for their bravery. The RNLI awards three classes of medal; Gold, Silver and Bronze. To date the number of medals awarded are:
Gold: 150
Silver: 1564
Bronze: 793 (only issued since 1917).
One of the most notable recipients is Henry Blogg, of the Cromer lifeboat crew, who was awarded the RNLI gold medal three times (and the silver four times). He also received the George Cross and the British Empire Medal. He is known as “The Greatest of all Lifeboatmen”.
The youngest recipient of an RNLI medal was eleven-year-old Frederick Carter who, along with sixteen-year-old Frank Perry, was awarded a Silver Medal for a rescue at Weymouth in 1890.
The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum is also given for notable acts.
One lifeboat received an award. For the Daunt lightship rescue in 1936, the RNLB Mary Stanford and her entire crew were decorated.[10]

The Lifeboat College, Poole
The headquarters of the RNLI are in Poole, Dorset. The RNLI site is located adjacent to the Holes Bay in Poole Harbour. It includes RNLI HQ, lifeboat maintenance and repair facilities, the Lifeboat Support Centre and the National Training Centre, the Lifeboat College. The support centre and college were opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2004.[12] Specialist training facilities include a wave and capsize pool, a fire simulator, a bridge simulator and an engineering workshop.[13]
A new headquarters for the RNLI Ireland was officially opened at Airside in Swords, north County Dublin, in June 2006 by Her Excellency President Mary McAleese. The Chairman of the Executive Committee of the RNLI, Admiral Sir Jock Slater, R.N., a former British First Sea Lord, was in attendance at this Irish Presidential ceremony.

Nyan Cat
Nyan Cat is the name of a YouTube video uploaded in April 2011, which became an Internet meme. The video merged a Japanese pop song with an animated cartoon cat with the body of a Pop-Tart, flying through space, and leaving a rainbow trail behind it. The video ranked at number 5 on the list of most viewed YouTube videos in 2011.[1]

On April 2, 2011, the GIF animation of the cat was posted by 25-year-old Christopher Torres of Dallas, Texas, who uses the name “prguitarman”, on his website LOL-Comics.[2] Torres explained in an interview where the idea for the animation came from: “I was doing a donation drive for the Red Cross and in-between drawings in my Livestream video chat, two different people mentioned I should draw a “Pop Tart” and a “cat”.” In response, he created a hybrid image of a Pop-Tart and a cat, which was developed a few days later into the animated GIF.”[3]

The original version of the song “Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!” was uploaded by user “daniwell”[4] to the Japanese video site Nico Nico Douga on July 25, 2010.[5] The song features the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku (初音ミク?). The Japanese word for the sound cats make, “nyā” (にゃあ?), is the equivalent of the English language word “meow”.[6][1]
A user named “Momo Momo” (“もももも”) uploaded a remixed version of the song “Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!”, adding the repeating vocal sound “nyan” throughout the song, to Nico Nico Douga on January 31, 2011.[7] The added vocal sound was created using the singing synthesizer software UTAU with the voice preset, “Momone Momo” (桃音モモ).[8] The UTAU voice preset, “Momone Momo”, gets its name from the kanji “momo” 桃, meaning “peach”, and “ne” 音, meaning “sound”.[9] The voice source used to create the Momone Momo voice was Fujimoto Momoko (藤本萌々子?), a Japanese woman who lives in Tokyo.[10]

YouTube user “saraj00n” combined the cat animation with the “Momo Momo” version of the song “Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!”, and uploaded it to YouTube on April 5, 2011, three days after Torres had uploaded his animation, giving it the title “Nyan Cat”.[1][3] The video rapidly became a success after being featured on websites including G4 and CollegeHumor. Christopher Torres said: “Originally, its name was Pop Tart Cat, and I will continue to call it so, but the Internet has reached a decision to name it Nyan Cat, and I’m happy with that choice, too.”[3]
Popularity

The Nyan Cat music video reached ninth place in Business Insider’s top ten viral videos of April 2011, with 7.2 million total views.[11] The original YouTube video has received over 55 million views as of December 23, 2011. Due to its popularity, many new remixes and cover versions have been made, some hours long. There are also ringtones, wallpapers and applications created for operating systems including Windows 7,[12] Nokia,[13] iPhone, iPad,[14] Android,[15] HP webOS.[16] and Windows Phone 7.[17] In December 2011, “Nyan Cat Adventure” was released for Xbox Live Indie Games.[18]
Christopher Torres has criticized the website nyan.cat, which features a similar-looking cat with the same background music. The site, which uses the .cat sponsored top-level domain, has been described by Torres as “plagiarized”.[19][20]
Temporary DMCA Takedown

On June 27, 2011, the original YouTube video was taken down from the site following a Digital Millennium Copyright Act complaint from someone claiming to be prguitarman, the creator of the GIF animation. Christopher Torres (prguitarman) immediately denied being the source of the complaint, and contacted Saraj00n and daniwell, who hold the copyright for the video and the song, in order to file a counter-complaint to YouTube. On June 28, 2011, the video was restored to YouTube. During the period that the video was unavailable, Torres received hate mail from people who wrongly believed that he was the person behind the DMCA takedown notice.[21]

On the night of 9 December 1886, the German barque Mexico was wrecked at the mouth of the Ribble during a gale. Lifeboats were launched from Lytham, St. Annes and Southport to rescue the crew. Twenty-seven lifeboat men , fourteen of Southport and thirteen of St. Annes, perished. A third lifeboat, the Charles Biggs of Lytham, succeeded in reaching the Mexico and rescuing its crew of twelve. The RNLI said it was the worst disaster to befall the institution in its 187-year history.

Thanks very much to everyone who took part. Today I have to put the submission together and then it takes a few days but it has been a fun event. Anyone with a comment at 6am can mail me their address and I’ll send them a mug:)

And now I feel like a fool.. Just noticed this record ended at 06:00am and not 09:00am as my brain was telling me!

Tref, I think you should re-launch the record later in the year…. Set it going on the same day as the Olympics or Euro 2012 (don’t know why other than they are big events taking place…..)

Between now and then we should all help you raise awareness (using this blog to co-ordinate of course!) and really publicise the fact that you’re going for the record.

I think if you get enough of an awareness going (perhaps start a Facebook group) the qty of people helping you to go for this would be enough to smash your record to pieces!!!!

/Discuss people, who’s up for helping to annihilate this record?!

One unique post per person in the UK is all it would take.

Raise awareness with big companies, let them advertise on said website… Display their corporate logos, get them to “allow” their staff to submit an entry during working hours….

There was more money raised that there were comments! So Tref’s aim of a minimum of £1 per comment was met. Well done for everyone who took part to raise awareness and money for RNLI. I’d defiantly take part again but it does make you realise just HOW many comments a second it takes to break this world record.

The RNLI has enough money that if today they no longer received a penny more, they could sustain themselves for the next two years. No other charity has funds of that size.

However I guess the RNLI has another pound to play with now.
